This news report is appearing on Australian news outlets this eveing, bringing our weekend rest to an end:

US wants SAS, RAAF in Iraq campaign

With conflict in Iraq appearing more likely, the US is set to seek involvement of at least two key Australian military capabilities.

They are the Special Air Service regiment and RAAF air-to-air refuelling aircraft, which have both operated effectively within the US-dominated coalition against terror.

Both have also won high praise from the US military.

With the war on terror slowing in Afghanistan, both theoretically would be available for another campaign.

Australian commanders have been cautious not to comment on a possible Iraq involvement.

The official government line is that no invitation has been received from the US, and if and when it arrives it will be considered on merits.

But the US has made no secret of its desire to have the Australians on board.

    Ozzie,

Thats because you bastards are such good fighters!!!

Mix all that Aussie common sense, with a penchant for tenacity, who wouldn't want you fighting along side?

    G'day DB:

Thanks for the compliment (I think!), but our PM (John Howard) is going to have a battle at home on his hands with this. Polls today show most Aussies are agin' it.

    Cheers, Ozzie

Blimey, but I think our friends down under will join in at the proper time. The air's too thick with politics right now for anything but the smoke. When the fire starts blazing, I think the Ozzies will be there.

I mean, wasn't there a threat against the Rialto Towers last 9/11? And other threats against other stuff? Lookit, the world's largest Muslim population lives, um, quite near your northern coast.

BTW, saw the IMAX production of Australia, the Land Down Under, at the Atlanta Fernbank Science Center last weekend. It was really good. Not a human, nor a man-made object in the entire film. Beautiful country you all have got down there. No wonder the camel-jockeys want it.

    Ozzie,

I was almost certain you would take the "bastards" as a compliment, as it was intended. Maybe Iam under a wrong impression about the term. Thought you guys down under, considered it a term of endearment, when used properly.

It was a compliment, you bastard. ;)

Was just watching that movie "Thirteen Days"......excellent movie and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the situation we're going through now with potential war looming ahead of us. It's about how close we came to blowing ourselves to kingdom come during the Cuban Missile Crisis and it's shown from the President's point of view........

I read about the Aussies fighting the Japs in the jungles of New Guinen. They kicked the Jap's behinds back over the Owen Stanley mountains. Bush definately would like some Australian fighting men on his side.

According to George it's going to start blazing in weeks, not months.

It could last a very long time to boot.
