I had some Jehovah Witness people comming to my door.

One day they ask me if I would like to have a Bible study.

Just curious at what they would.

I said yes as long as we stay in the Bible. They said OK.

I found out they could`nt teach from the Bible without their helps.

One day one of them said OH!! Carol we have identified another scripture. I said you have.

They pointed to some scripture in the Old Testament. The scripture was pointing to somethint , Like that was half way through a storie.

I ask what it ment and He had some big answer, that it represented The Jw`s in the last days.

I looked at Him and thought you can`t believe that, but the glow that was in His face. I knew He did.

I thought all you have to do is start at the top of the Chapter, it tell you exactly what it means.

I felt so sorry for them. I realised then they were brain washed.

Does any one else have any information as to them Identifying certain scriptures.

This was all new to me.

Hi Carol. Welcome to the forum.

You are correct. Jehovah's Witnesses atre unable to teach the Bible unless they refer to literature published by the watchtower organization. If fact, they are taught that to understand the Bible correctly they need the help of other books and magazines.

Therefore, when being taught by Jehovah's Witnesses you have to careful that what they are teaching you is indeed based on scripture and not on the watchtower.

The Word is living, and you don't need all of it at once. I have no problem with looking at even one word on it's own, but the way you hear is what it is - it doesn't matter if you read a sentence or a whole book.

Fact is, if that's the way your headed, then that's simply "how you hear".

"take heed then how you hear, for to him who has more will be given"

    And the best bit

"for him who has not, even the little he has will be taken away"

Now is that good news or what. Depends on how you hear, eh? LOL

That Jesus absolutely cracks me up sometimes. It's the best news that I have ever heard in my life. But it depends on how you hear it. LOL

Before I knew my husband, he used to play games with the JWs who came to his door. He is the most unreligious person you would ever know, through and through athiest, but he has studied the Bible. He would stump them left and right, and then laugh at them when they'd pull out the Reasoning book to try to find an answer. He'd say, "No, that's not the Bible. Show me in the Bible." They'd stutter and fuss...my husband loves doing that.

I never pulled out the Reasoning book at the door. I found it ridiculous. Imagine...you get asked a question you really should know by now, and you pull out some book and say, "Wait just a moment." Furiously flip through the pages, looking like a complete tosser to the "householder." *rolls eyes*

On the other way, does one have the right to expect that a person calling should have ALL the answers, should in a sense know ALL the Bible by heart? There are in my eyes essential places, and then not so essential places.

    wolfgirl,

I think most witnesses feel that way about the reasoning book. funny thing is that is does not learn you how to reason but provides answers and scriptures that often are completely unrelated to the subject. for example: about birthdays it points to a scripture where jezus commands his diciples to repeat the ceremopny at pentecost. but the fact that you should celebrate that does not mean you are prohibited to celebrate birthdays. and how about this one: imaging someone says "but the bible is inconsistent". The JW flips through the reasoning book and somewhere under 'bible' finds this answer: "nobody has ever shown me one" LOL do you need a book to tell you this?! It also is a good oppertunity for the householder to show the JW some! Ridiculous!

    Carol you asked:

"Does any one else have any information as to them Identifying certain scriptures.

This was all new to me. "

The Watchtower Society has a whole host of scriptures that they use incorrectly. You're right all you have to do is read the surrounding text and then the meaning will become clear. But they do not. They take one scripture and read it and attach it to whatever their point is and thus they think they have proved their point from the bible. For instance:

John 14:28 Jesus says "the father is greater than I am" if you do not read the surrounding text you will think Jesus was referring to himself as being lessor in nature than his father. But if you read on you will see he's referring to position. In fact the father was in a greater or higher position. Jesus' then said he's going to that very place Just as if I were on the 10th floor, I would be in a greater position than somone on the 1st floor.

Col. 1:15 says "Jesus is the first born of all creation." The Watchtower uses this text to try to prove that Jesus was created by Jehovah. However in context, first born means favored position, not the first one born. In many places in the bible, the one actually born first was not considered the first born. See Psalms 89:20,27 David was the last born son of Jesse (1Sam 17:14) but was assigned or chosen to be the first born. According to Jewish standards that meant he was the favored one, he would get more than the rest. Also first born and first created are two different words in both Hebrew and Greek, with different meanings.

Lev. 17:14 says "you must not eat blood" The Watchtower uses this text to try and support their no blood transfusion policy. They say it's against God's law for anyone to take blood into their bodies in any way. If they do they are no longer a follower of God, and need to be shunned. However is this what the bible says? In the same chapter of Lev. (17) look at the very next verse (15) it tells the penalty for anyone who eats blood. It says " he must bathe and wash his garments" and that evening he will again be considered clean in Gods eyes.

This is a small sample of the scriptures that the Watchtower Society twists and quote out of context to prove their beliefs. I hope this answers your question.

Hey if you really wanted to be sneaky, you had the Un-Reasonable Book sown into the back of your Bible so the householder thought you were searching for scripture, but you were looking for Borg advise...and if you had a good partner, they'd keep the householder busy while you came up with something and then they would do the same..back and forth. Good sales tactics.
