I remember in the summer 2001, When the CO was given a speech about the Malawi sister's and brother's. He told how the top JW wanted to talk to the president of Malawi. When they arrived to the meeting the president was nervous and had his lawyer beside him. When he heard that they wanted to by a building site to build a bethel home he was relaxed because he believed that they wanted to sue the Malawi goverment because of the cruel treatment of the Jehovas Witnesses in Malawi. The president of Malawi and the JW then drove in a car and he showed them a ground they could buy very cheap .They built the Bethel and many off the sisters and brothers who went trough all the beaten and killing and raping was sow glad to see the new Bethel home that they began to sing the Kingdom Hall songs and they were all happy. I got very angry when i heard the speech.I think they should had sued the Malawi goverment.

I think they should sue the governing body who mis-read and mis-applied the Bible with the pious God is on our side, its close to 1975 the end of the world is coming chicken little scheme that caused brothers and sisters to lose their homes, crops, and lives. The 25 cent card was not voting. It was a citizenship card, much like the social security card used in the USA. Granted President Banda was a tyrant. But when your government is being attacked by subversives you have to get a handle on it. The card determined whether or not you would were going to obey Banda and follow the laws of the land. Worship was not involved and choosing a political leader was not involved. Banda had already been elected "president for life." Look in your encyclopedias. I have spoken with someone who lived in Malawi (non-JW) who said that the people of Malawi consider that era a "misunderstanding." If God is behind the WT why are there misunderstanding. Sounds more like human error and unreasonableness to me. JW rhetoric that we are always right, we will take over the world. Remember, this was all on the back drop of WT holding Armageddon over our heads as being imminent in 1975or shortly thereafter. Apocalyptic notions have caused trouble throughout the centuries.

Uh, yeah especially when they were sending letters to Mexico at the same time stating that they could give bribes to public officials for a document that stated that they had served in the military. The blood is on the hands of the WTS, these witnesses in Malawi trusted the society as the word coming down from God and gave their lives because they wouldn't go against it. The society could have saved all these lives by changing the policy at that time which they don't even subscribe to today.
The horrible part is that this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to WTS bloodshed.

Mr Rocky and Random Task. Thanks for your opinion, I agree with you both.

Misunderstandings came at a high price. The WT directive for that period of time seems to be based on a Western democratic political system where there are three choices: yes, no, abstain (neutral). Malawi was not a Western democracy. There was no choice to be made. Political rulershp was not at issue. Citizenship (laws, taxation, etc.) were the issue. I wonder if WT would do the same thing if the US decided to make people pay 25 cents to get a social security card. While there are politics involved in the USA social security system the average John Q. Public is not involved in those political issues. 'President for life' are just substitute words for dictator. If you didn't have the card you didn't belong in the country.

If I had known what was going on in Mexico compared to the policy in Malawi, I would have eased on down the road long ago. A person learns not to put their hand on a hot burner because it is his/her hand that suffers. The problem lies when people make decisions but it is the other person's hand that burns.
I always remember the Milgram study when I am astonished at WTS cruelty and lack of remorse.
