    great post happysunshine,

The WBTS tell all who'll listen that they are keen students of history but, like the lyrics in the old simon and garfunkle song "The Boxer" they "hear what they want to hear and disregard the rest" (especially the nuts and bolts of thier own past .. the thought process that fermented in Russells head and the common neurosis that gave him such a wide audience)

Charles Taze Russell, along with countless other quazi-educated prophets of Jesus second comming, was heavily influenced by and benifited by the adventist mood prevailing in post civil war USA. ... Multiple Marriage Morons, SeventhDayCalithumpians, Salvation Army's, Billy Grahams Oral Baptists, AGusts MeshuaHumbug Jehovahrights ..only in america could a civil war produce such an explosion of religions. (i get the feeling that it's easier to observe americas bizzare view of God from the outside)

A while back I posted long on this and several, including af, came up with good books on the subject.

    all the best, unclebruce

ps: ... if only a certain Serbian had shot an ArchDukes Furdown Ostrich in January 1915 instead of August 1914 we wouldn't be having this conversation! ;)

    UncleObserver,

***Charles Taze Russell, along with countless other quazi-educated prophets of Jesus second comming, was heavily influenced by and benifited by the adventist mood prevailing in post civil war USA. ***

It is funny isn't it, that the good ole USA was the kinda the hot bed of modern day Adventist thought. We Americans pride ourselves in starting or inventing so many things. Industrial revolution, technologies, democracy(albeit the Greeks-Romans), but the most treasured one we lay pretty much most of the claim to fame for is 'freedom of speech' and 'religion'.

Is it any wonder why so many fruit cakes like Miller, Barber, Charle TAAAAZE could spew out all thier whacko interpretations? Joseph Smith finding the gold tablets in a field somewhere in NY(?).

Its a wonder you outsiders, ever paid an ounce of attention to us, when it comes to religion. Get enough follower's behind your crazyness, and the world is your doormat, I guess.

So dear brother from down under, please forgive us American's for foisting our idiotic religious fervor for the insane upon you poor unsuspecting souls.

    BearAppologies

no need to apologise over history bearbutt, (where does that path end? .. with the first caveman apologising for telling his tribe some mushrooms spoke to him i guess ;)

don't worry Australia did it's share of "christianising" natives who thought that since we had mastered blacksmithing and wheelrighting we must have the answer to all things wonderfull and superior connections to unseen heavenly power.

There's not much sadder than seeing Aboriginies sing about Jesus.

    cheers, unc.

excellent points all. Take one example, the Mormons. I undersatnd that at least some have a movement claiming Smith never endorsed polygamy, among other things. Attempting to re-write history. I wonder where else this occurs...
