I am saddened by this news, but a bit confused. It was my understanding that JW youths were "not allowed" to pursue such interests and remain in "good standing".

The organization has changed, even though they don't like to admit it. A surprising number of kids participate in athletics, band, etc.Soem congregations are pretty hard line about it but most aren't.
