Is 'Accuracy' Really Their Goal?

While I have a lot to do, some Watchtower deceptions are so galling, I am compelled
    to report them herein.

The Dec. 2002 KM has a full page article called "Do You Contribute To An Accurate Report?"

The introduction begins with a blatant lie to deceive simple-minded Witnesses.

"At Pentecost 33CE, about 3000 were baptized, and shortly thereafter the number of
believers grew to some 5000 (Acts 2:41; 4:4) It is evident from these accounts that
God's ancient servants put forth much effort to compile a complete and accurate
    record."

READ THE SCRIPTURES FOR YOURSELF! These examples were little more than 'crowd
estimates'. The early Christians rounded off their count in both cases to THREE
ZEROS! Other accounts in the Bible that offer numbers ending in zero are likely
just approximations, also. 'God's ancient servants' weren't interested in statistics,
unlike the number-worshipping Pharisees at the Watchtower!

In addition, the KM offers some counsel on what book study conductors should do to
to coerce attenders into reporting field service time:

"A word of encouragment, a practical suggestion, or an invitation to accompany him
in the field service is often all that's needed."

    and

"If any are forgetful about reporting their activity, he can provide appropriate reminders
    and encouragement."

How much imagination does it take to realize that countless Witness will report time
just to avoid being hassled? Isn't it reasonable to expect that conversations will
take place like "C'mon sister, you MUST HAVE put in SOME time, this month!".
I see NOTHING in this article that counsels publishers about TRUTHFULLY CLAIMING
REAL HOURS SPENT IN A MINISTRY.

A superficial reading of the Society's statistics will quickly tell you that their
'preaching work' is a remarkably unproductive activity. 'Puffing up' the numbers
with cut-rate pioneers (who used to put in 90 hours) and 15 minute publishers is hardly
the work of men worried about ACCURACY!- but this is how YOU ENGINEER 'INCREASES'!

You and I both know how 'accurate' this field service is - from years of counting time
getting warm in the van, knocking on doors and finding nobody home, and driving from
one end of a county , selling magazines, to another to score a couple hours!

The elderly hypocrites who compile these often meaningless numbers know all about
real accuracy - just take a look at their 'regulations' about handling congregation
accounts in recent years - how carefully they double count money in the presence of two
two brothers, fill out duplicate receipts, and so on.

If MONEY is the subject, instead of their faked 'preaching work', SUDDENLY REAL
    ACCURACY becomes a concern.

There is much more that can be said about their statistics - and their credibility.
Suffice to say, there is no truth to be found in accurately counting numbers
that are often fake, in themselves.

.... but, of course, the Society likes it that way!

    Well stated as usual, Meta.

The field service has long deteriorated in a meaningless charade, little mpore than a ``feel good'' n excersize, a sort of installmnet payment on a dub's idyllic New World homestead, complete with lion cubs and lambs cavorting on the front lawn while its inhabitants ingest a vegetarian feast.

If the work ethic of any private business matched that of the average dub publisher car group, how many nanoseconds would it take for it to go belly-up?

Years ago, I read that the Soviet Union had declining productivity because of
    faking effort and alcoholism.
I wondered what would happen to them if they didn't reverse this trend - and the
    rest is history.

How much Pretense Maintenance is the Society willing to do to keep it's
fakery alive? 5 minute publishers? Da'ing the inactive? Creating new congregations
    where no growth exists?

Is there any bottom to this make believe?

Exactly. Which makes me wonder about the main reason they even have people go out in the ministry anymore. It certainly isn't to make converts. Even the Society must realize that only a small number of their conversions result from door-to-door contacts, and there are much more effective ways to attract people.

No, I think they continue to push the field ministry simply because it keeps the dubs too busy to do any "independent thinking". As long as they don't have a free minute, there's little danger of them stopping to think about whether what they're doing is the right thing. They're far too busy just keeping up with doing it all.

    Exactly so!

Few Witnesses have commented on the subtle change in the ministry - from an effort
to make converts to a blind, unproductive end in itself.

The same motive exists behind all this repetition of personal Bible reading.
Eat up everyone's time so they have no time to think about anything else.
The Society has no great interest in anyone learning the Bible - apart from its
    arbitrary interpretations.

Neither do they have any great expectations of a general increase in Bible knowledge,
as shown by dumbing down the Watchtower, dumping the written review and putting readings
in place of talks in the Ministry School.

When a business changes their method of revenue recognition, or any other accounting policy that affects current and prior profit, it is required to disclose this on their statements.

The society has lowered the threshhold for what constitutes a publisher, yet they did not make any disclosure on their annual report, nor did they provide even an estimate of the impact of the change.

If this was a public corporation, there would be heads rolling and charges being laid.

    Accuracy, my ass.

"C'mon sisterbrother, you MUST HAVE put in SOME time, this month!".

I had this exact phrase asked of me many times during the last couple of years of my JW imprisonment. I'd make up a few hours to get them off my back.

How much Pretense Maintenance is the Society willing to do to keep it's fakery alive? 5 minute publishers? Da'ing the inactive? Creating new congregations where no growth exists?

Actually, that is exactly what they are doing. DF'ing the inactive is and will continue to happen. COs and by extension elders hate having inactive ones on the rolls (makes them look bad) and will often go to great extents to force a decision from those ones - "You are either for us or against us". And at least in the US, the hall building work just keeps on happening, but now they are just in the business of replacing existing halls for no reason. Not growth inspired at all - in fact many halls are re-combining. Or they split a 120 pub hall (usually with 80 or so at each meeting) to two 60 pub halls, and now you have 30-40 people at the meetings.

Good point on the $$$ accuracy. They got burned a few times with theft and now they are real careful with their money. But they don't mind hour inflation.

When I served as the book study conductor way back when. The secretary used to hand me a list of the ones in my book study group who failed to report their time.I remember how embarrassing and uneasy it was for me and the publishers to report the forgotten field service time.I hated to have to do this. That was when each one put their field service time in the box in the back of the kingdom hall.I wouldn't want to be a book study"OVERSEER"now or be in the bookstudy now, where you have to hand your report personally to the book study "OVERSEER".ERR,I can't read your handwriting, oh well i'll just put down 15 hrs.for you this way my bookstudy group will look real good in the report to the C.O.when he visit us.Blueblades
