To make 12 half cup severings in a large sauce pan, beat together 8 eggs, 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Stir in 2 cups of skim milk or lowfat milk. Cook over low heat stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon with a thin coat. Needs to be 160 degrees on a instant -read thermometer. Remove from heat. Stir in additional 2 cups of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled , several hours or over night. Just before party pour into punch bowl or pitcher.

To serve in a bowl, freeze some in a ring mold to float in the rest of the egg nog to keep it cold. On the side set out garnishes: Chocolate curls, cinnamon or pepperment sticks, ground nutmeg, etc.

Also you can always spike it with rum or whiskey.

Another thing I do, is take Coco and add pepperment sticks or drops to the mixture when I make Hot coco.. it is great. With marshmellows...yum. William Sonoma has a great tin of it. Too for ready made.
