Ripped off by JW

    Hi All,

My hubby has been doing photo assignments for the local newspaper. Two weeks ago, I got a call from a JW wanting a copy of photo he had taken. It had some of her family members in it.

The phone call was strange, she didn't identify herself but we have caller id, so I knew who it was. Tried to sound like she didn't know us, even though she called our phone number and the paper said she never called them. Hubby's name is listed directly under each photo that is his.

Since hubby uses a digital camera, I offered to email the photo to her but she refused, wanted a print out instead. I said there would be a fee but didn't know how much that would be, so she gave me her phone number. I then asked hubby how much and I called her the next day with prices for different sizes. Her husband answered the phone when I called, and I called him by name and said it is Sadie calling. He asked me why I was calling. I said his wife had called me the day before asking about getting a photo. I asked if I could speak to her. She picked up the phone and I told her the prices. She picked out a size and agreed to the price. I said I would call her when the picture was ready. So I called her the next day when the picture was done, she said she would be in to pick it up that day, but she never showed up.

I don't know what these people's problem is, but she just wasted our time and material and didn't keep her word.

Sadie-who thinks from now on, it will be money up front first for all JWs.

I don't know what the problem is either. I contracted with a JW to paint a house. He built it. When completed he still owed me a couple of thousand bucks. He has never paid. Since I trusted him I did not put a lien on the house. Funny thing is a couple of months later he had his wife call me to ask what colors and paints I had used since they were making some changes. I laughed and said hubby still owes me money doesn't he. Bye....

I know all too many brothers that have been ripped off. Not all are like this but all too many are. Oh he was appointed a servant just a couple of months later. After I had told my story to his PO. I figured telling the PO was my best recourse. It wasn't.

i've had so called bros trying it on, one time it involved a couple of thousand pounds. when it comes to money a lot of JWs are a complete pain in the arse. i'm not one to let them get away with it though, and i sure put the pressure on, getting their elders involved and using the JW system to my advantage.

sadie..... send them a bill and if theres no response, get in touch with their elder and ask him if he could get in contact with them about paying the bill and just mention something like 'small claims court'(or your equivalent) in the conversation and then see what happens. i'm sure you'll get your money sooner or later.

    Sadie,

I'm sorry; What they did is not right.

One option: is billing them & sending the bill with signature requested through the mail. I don't know if a judge would or wouldn't honor this. They might say it is a civil thing & usually you're required to have some type of "contract". I don't know how a verbal contract would work.

    2) You could use their own medecine & quote that bible text that says something like YOur Yes should be YES & your no should be no. (Don't remember the exact text)

I don't know if you read my thread on how a JW -housecleaner stole my home made blackberry jam. You can check out the thread. I know exactly how you feel. They have been taught to only think about themselves & that everyone else in the world is evil.

It's not true that JW's are the most honest people. Look how they don't protect the children from sexual/molestation/incest abuse.

I could go on & on ranting, but I'll stop now.

I would send a bill With the scripture at Romans 13:8

" Do not you people be owing anybody a single thing, except to love one another"

Reminds me of the pickup-truck I bought from an elder and his son. A week after I bought it, I had to rebuild the motor and the transmission. I was assured that it was in good running condition. Not too long after, the elder died. I let it slide.

I would look into collections proceedures. You may send a person a bill within a envelope, you may call them and leave a message requesting a call back only ( no going into amounts owed , and you must speak only to the debtor, lest the debtor has given written permission otherwise. etc.), you may take them to small claims court. There are also some other things you can do to collect a debt.

But they must follow the Fair Credit Act and Collection proceedures lest they debtor have grounds to come back on you upon. There have been suits over improper collection practices. Just a friendly heads up.

TR - you should still prosecute that elder in the New System.

TR, yes! Slap a waterproof repair bull on his tombstone, so when he wakes up in the resurrection it's the first thing he sees! That'll surprise him! But not as much as when he goes for a "readjustment" and he finds his goolies are gone! Ha Ha!
