    The following thread discusses the eternity of Christ in the Old Testament. Please restrict your comments to Old testament passages on the eternity of Christ (I will start a New Testament thread later).

    "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. psalm 90:2

    "The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was." Proverbs 8:22-23

    • Psalm 90:2 and Proverbs 8:22,23 have a very similar reading structure.
    • The same hebrew word for everlasting (strongs #5769) used to express the eternity of God in Psalm 90:2 is used to express the eternity of wisdom in Proverbs 8:23
    • Many recognized Bible transaltions KJV, ASV, NASB render the the third word in Proverbs 8:22 as "possessed" which perfectly fits the context as the LORD has always "possessed" wisdom.
    • The NWT rendering of the third word in Proverbs 8:22 as "produced" implies that there was a time when the LORD existed without wisdom. Also the NWT rendering "produced" does not fit the context as it is impossible fpr something to be "poduced" (verse 22) and at the same time be "from everlasting" (verse 23).
    • Though wisdom is pictured as being being female in Proverbs 8 and 9 it is often said to personify Christ.
    • If the passage refers to Christ it expresses his eternity.

    "Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting." Psalm 93:2

    "But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." Micah 5:2

  • Psalm 93:2 and Micah 5:2 have a very similar reading structure.

    hoob, one of my favorites is Jeremiah 23:6 "..and this is his name whereby he shall be called THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."

    Psalms 110:1 "The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until i make thine enemies thy footstool.

    Good info. on NWT rendering of possesed.

    Comparing some Old Testament passages with some New:

    Isaiah 41:4 "Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he."
    Revelation 1:17 "And when I saw him (Jesus), I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:"

    Isaiah 40:3 "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

    Mark 1:1-3 "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."


    Exodus 3:14 "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

    John 8:57,58 "Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."

    Isaiah 45:23 "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear."

    Joel 2:32 "And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call."

    Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord [Jesus] shall be saved."


    Zechariah 12:10 "And I [Jehovah] will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."

    Zechariah 14:9 "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one."

    Revelation 17:14 "These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful."


    Zechariah 11:11-13 And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD.     Matthew 26:15 "And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver."

    Here are some more Old Testament Scriptures about the Eternity of Christ (I'm using the World English Translation) (Words in brackets [] were added by me):

    Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel [which means "GOD With Us"].

    Isaiah 9:6: For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the Government shall be on His shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
    Isaiah 9:7: Of the increase of His Government and of peace there shall be no end, on the throne of David, and on His Kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Hosts will perform this.

    Psalm 45:6: Your throne, God, is forever and ever. A scepter of equity is the scepter of Your Kingdom.

    Psalm 45:17: I will make Your Name to be remembered in all generations. Therefore the peoples shall give You thanks forever and ever.

    Zechariah 3:2: Yahweh said to Satan, "Yahweh rebuke you, Satan! Yes, Yahweh who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn't this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?"

    (Notice, in Zechariah 3:2, there are at least TWO Persons called Yahweh [Jehovah; THE LORD])
