Birthdays and Holidays

We all know the Witness position of this subject. I think they simply do not understand human nature. They say that birthdays make a person self centered and egotistical. They say that they love their children the same all year long. I say horse pucky. With the press of working for a living, taking care of a house, etc, it is not possible to show special love all year, even though we do love our children. Everybody needs a special day. I love Mother's day for my wife and Father's day for me. Yes, my adult children love me, but for them to send me a card on that special day is, well, special. The same goes for holidays, the Christmas spirit is alive and well where I live, and I am glad to be a part of it. Thanksgiving was the same. I like to have a special day once a year, where I think about what I have to be thankful for. It's all good. What do think, friends and neighbors.

    I agree, larc.

It's nice to look forward to special occasions. It's part of our culture, and part of life. A good life, I might add.

And what do 'hovahs look forward to? Circuit assemblies? District assemblies? Special assemblies? Quick builds? Meetings? Field service? Memorial? Can any 'hovah honestly say they looked forward to any of the above, especially the assemblies? I doubt it.

I agree too, I think we need reminders to show our love and appreciation for our moms, dads, kids, friends etc. We always do love and appreciate them, but life just somehow gets busy or whatever..

    Hi Larc,

You got my address. Would appreciate a Christmas present and my birthday is June 19th. Don't forget!

    Of course, I'll reciprocate.

You're right on about your comments but the Society would like to ruin anything that brings families together. They want to be the center of everything. They had no problem with an AWAKE article back in 1974 (?) announcing their 100th birthday with an article entitled '100 YEARS AND STRONGER THAN EVER'!

Yep, the 'glory days' are about over.

Outaservice, you are one of those special people that gives of themselves. I have always appreciated your generosity and the special items you have mailed to me. You are a very good man.

It has always amused me how the WTS tweaks everything into their point of view. In this post, it is regarding the holidays.

What they fail to realize is that these are days designed to be special. I have only now had 2 birthdays actually celebrated for me, though I have been out much longer. Never did I feel egotistical, or anything. For me, it was a great excuse to go out to dinner with my wife, and then she suprised me at home with a bunch of my friends, and we spent the evening socializing.

Christmas was dismissed as not being Jesus's birthday, and "he never told us to honor his birthday, just his death", or how horrible it was that people were only nice to each other on the holidays. For sure we didn't want to be part of this evil system.

These special days, are just that. Time to spend with loved ones, and friends.

Not celebrating birthdays and holidays can make a Witness very special. It's all part of giving up everything for Jehovah. Self-sacrafice is the key to pleasing God. Since God is not pleased by anything associated with paganism or false worship, our not celebrating these things is simply what should be expected. And since innocent people got killed on a birthday, it is obvious that true Christians would wisely abstain from such things.

An innocent person was killed on Nisan 14 yet JWs celebrate that day.
