In a way this thread is related to the one on Why the fixation with the Nazis I started last week - http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=41752&site=3

Anyway, the public talk on Sunday was the one persecution, cant remember the exact title but I am sure many will recall it. The speaker was excellent and made the talk very lively but somehow missed what I would consider the major point. The whole theme was being persecuted because of being Jehovahs Witnesses; Witness kids at school, at work, picked on for being Jehovahs Witnesses, Witnesses in Nazis Germany, etc.

I checked my Bible during the talk, and in mine it speaks about is being persecuted because of being a follower of Jesus. The scriptures you will objects of hatred on account of my (Jesus) name were never mentioned once.

I am afraid that I never ceased to be amazed lately just how little regard to what the Bible actually says is paid either in the literature or from the platform. Theology of any description seems to be either totally lacking or non-existent.

Great point, eyeslice. In Canada, I saw an episode on the History channel on how the Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted in Quebec. Yes, the Catholic church was livid over their proselytizing, and publishers risked being mobbed in the street. The announcer made the simple comment that the JW's brought some of this hostility on themselves by publishing anti-Catholic materials that would be classed as Hate literature today.

Am I grateful that the JW's spurred the creation religious freedom laws that protect us all today? Yes. Did the JW's get there by pure and innocent motives? Hardly.

Are you really, REALLY sure about that?

I mean, think of some of the whack-job religions out there.

You SURE that the rights the witnesses have one through snivelling lawyers is a victory for humanity?

    Just wondering...

(In any case, I'd rather the victories over the appearance of state sponsorship of religion have been won by any group BUT another religious group - atheists, scientists, etc.)

Is persecution a sure sign of divine approval? If it is, then Jws will have to concede to Mormons, etc. that same approval.

But Kenneson, don't you remember, the persecution against the other religions doesn't really COUNT, because they weren't doing Kingdom witnessing. Suffer all they want, it doesn't matter! Don't you believe the Watchtower?

Sure, I might just have my finger down my throat when I say it, but the WTS did win some landmark cases about religious freedoms. Which other Christian churches enjoy today. Let's not rewrite history just because we don't like it.
