I've been considering making a move from my current corporate IT position into one at a hospital or a similar setting. For the people who already work in an environment like this maybe you can answer a few questions for me.
Do hospitals normally have 24 hour IT support?
Is it possible to find part time work in IT positions at medical facilities/hospitals?
Do part timers at hospitals have medical benefits/insurance?
Thanks
Does anyone here work for a hospital/med center?

I work in a hospital.
I guess it would depend a lot on the hospital's corporate structure and size as to whether IT support was required 24/7. The hospital where I work is the largest in Ontario (Canada): 3 main campuses, plus 3 satellite operations. We have about 1500 beds in the hospital proper, plus outpatient clinics and day surgery beds. We could not function without 24/7 IT support.
The pay and benefits package would depend on what the hospital has negotiated with the union (if there is one). For example, as a part time employee, I am paid a percentage of my wages in lieu of benefits. After a certain number of hours of employment, I was able to enroll in the hospital's pension program. Those were both union-negotiated terms of my contract.
The best thing for you to do is ask questions when you're being interviewed. Most hospitals in Canada do not hire someone off the street into a permanent full-time position, due to union and seniority issues. You usually have to serve in a casual (on-call) type position for a while and then work your way up through the ranks as your seniority increases and other positions become available.

Yes, the one I work at does, The Help desk is 24X7, the admin's are on call, i am a analyst, I am even on call some times, Hell the PBX tech's are on call

you need to go bang on door's? whats the deal, the medical industry is ideal, I work full time, and it is like having a part time job, come in when i want, leave when i want, no one says a thing. the only thing more undemanding then working at a hospital, is maybe working a government job, but I cant image it is much better. But maybe I am just jaded; I worked 10 years in commercial construction. You know 90 hour weeks, no Ot, no benefits. Sleeping in motel 6 for months on end

My wife works for a Huge multi-national Health Care Company. She's a director in physician services...and I know she depends on her I/T support. She used to work for an Educational hospital that is well known and one of her friends that is still there is in I/T and Tech support.
Should be wide open for you.
