What MAKES Us Happy?

    People? Things? Beliefs?

Consider some synonyms: pleasure, satisfaction, enjoyment, gratification, appreciation, delight, euphoria, contentment, well-being, joy, bliss, cheerfulness, optimism...

Each and every one of these feelings are generated from WITHIN, not from without.

No thing and no one else does this. No God, no religion, no friend, no lover, no child, no job, no amount of money, no cloud in the sky MAKES us happy. We can have any or all of these, and be miserable. Or, we can have few or none of these things, and be happy.

    WE make OURSELVES happy.

    Happiness is a CHOICE.

I know what would really make me happy---------- A big tank of laughing gas strapped on my back, blowing continuous nitrous right into my nostrils........ yep that would do it. Can you tell I have had a rough month??????????

Seriously, you are 100% right on , Craig.

We can have the world handed to us on a silver platter, but if we don't love ourselves we can not be truly happy.

Self love is one of the hardest things to accomplish after leaving JW. For so many years we are taught to forsake ourselves, put away materialistic ideas, don't better yourself , unless it will help the WT sell more mags. It takes some time to adjust to the feelings of sheer joy, from the little things in life that we didnt notice before. Since leaving JW, I feel like a kid, experiencing so many new things for the first time. It is awesome to be this happy, especially from someone who has been in the pits of dark depression. Sometimes I wonder how long it will last, I am so programmed to self destruct, if I get too happy. So far that hasnt happened, I work hard on being happy , not always easy by nature, but it sure is worth the rewards.

Ultimately, my happiness is dependent upon me and I do try to be happy for the most part. My grandsons definitely make me happy. But, I also have to say, there is a lady down in Texas that always puts a smile on my face and in my heart.

LyinEyes: Sorry you're having a rough time. But, wow, did you hit the nail on the head! Soooooo much was pumped into us a dubs about the "love your neighbor" part (like you said: preach, teach, reach and be happy), but, honestly, I can't recall ANY emphasis on the "love yourself" part. That would almost be sacreligious. If we loved ourselves, just because of ourselves, and for ourselves, well...that's "worldy" thinking, eh? How much better to do like Paul "I beat my body and make it my slave."

On the other hand, if we DO truly love ourselves, and BE happy because we chose to be happy, then we also have to shoulder up and admit that unhappiness is a self-inflicted pain. We can't then blame someone else.

    Lew: Spill the beans
