London Calling...

I know this is a topic that will get very little attention on the board but when I heard that Joe Strummer died yesterday I said to myself......well, I guess I couldn't really tell you because the profanity would have surpased a David Mamet film. For me, I only had one band that I truly liked, and that band was The Clash. For my money they were the best band to ever walk the earth. I can name you every single album, almost every single song, and quote you lyric by lyric off of London Calling. There isn't a band today who could reach the depth of Washington Bullets, The Card Cheat, Straight to Hell, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Revolution Rock, Hitsville U.K., Guns of Brixton, Janie Jones or Rudy Can't Fail. Those 10 songs represent, for me, the best that music has to offer. And no other band has approached that emotion or artistic excellence in creating songs about American imperialism, revolutions in latin america, class systems, or class struggles...or...really for that matter all the important events of the last century. The Clash were the best...period. I know some of you would agree with me...

I dunno about 'the best,' but yeah, The Clash was great!

I can't say that I ever was heavily into The Clash, although I certainly experienced some great times pogoing and bopping around to some of their music. I believe I even have a few of their tunes in colured vinyl.

For me, my memories of The Clash remind me of liberation from David Cassidy and the like and the garbage that was around pre-punk era.

Mind you I was still at school in their hey-day. And I did actually prefer the Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers and Generation X.

    Yet still, a sad day.

Yes I have been listening to the Clash all day; Joe Strummer death is a sad loss for music.

Just to show all how important Joe Strummer influence was, his death has been the headline for the best part of the day on the BBC News website. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/2600669.stm .

Also, have a read of the many words of condolences here: http://www.strummernews.com/

    Great band Preston!

The beautiful thing about music is how it can reach us on the inside and give us a feeling that is hard to express, emotionally and physically it moves us!
