quote:
"The ruling assumption is that money is the shortest route to freedom. Absurdly, that strategy is cast as the "practical approach." But in truth, the opposite is true. The shortest route to the good life involves building the confidence that you can live happily within your means ( whatever the means provided by the choices that are truly acceptable to you turn out to be ). It's scary to imagine living on less. But embracing your dreams is surprisingly liberating. Instilled with a sense of purpose, your spending habits naturally reorganize, because you discover that you need less. This is an extremely threatening conclusion. It suggests that the vast majority of us aren't just putting our dreams on ice -- we're killing them."
While agreeing with some of this in principle, this article could only be aspired to by someone who already has money, which the writer obviously is. A poor person cannot always find their dreams with no money and being told that this is because of their state of mind could be viewed as being trodden down or controlled by the upper classes and told to keep a smile on their faces.

Conserving funds is something many many people need to do. Living within one's means is a terrific goal. Obviously there are people who are already carry a lot of debt and make very little money... they may need to make more money in order to pay off their debt sooner so eventually they can meet their goals.
We used to have some decent sized debts and a fairly low income. I busted my butt to trim expenses and pay off the debts. Our income is still pretty low, but the five of us manage pretty well. We have some money saved towards a down payment on a house and we plan to buy within the next year. My new goal will be paying off the mortgage as soon as possible.
