OK...I remember when going to the Hall it was OK to say fortunate...but not "Lucky"..Anyone here that can explain the difference.?

My JW mother in law was always correcting me..even tho I wasn't a witness anymore!..And being the "Kind" soul I am.. went along with her..for respect..

But where was the respect for my beliefs?..Apparently this is a OneWay street!..Ya Know?

    Snoozy..aka..Golden Girl...

How would the Jehovah Witnesses explain the luck of the Irish?

Don't say "Peanut Butter" either. Jehovah gets really pissed when you say Peanut Butter.

The JW's obviously are superstitious about saying the word "lucky". It'll bring you bad luck.

OK, if you want the serious answer -- they appeal to a Bible verse in Isaiah which condemns people "worshipping the God of Good Luck". So this translation turns "luck" into a God.

    This is so unfortunate.

OMG, you've done it Gopher ! Your "luck" has run out. You will not make it into the NS (New System) due to your language.

TBS------all these years I've avoided saying penis butter, now you say it's "peanut butter." I can't keep up........

they also have a habit of trying to correct you if you assign the word friend to any acquaintance you have who happens to be non-jw

    "Oh...he's your "friend" now ???

Oh...and they also have dibbs on the words awesome or awe-inspiring

Just a few days ago my wife was grilling her non-jw sister because she used the term awesome to describe a movie she'd seen. Seems they take to heart either a WT quote or a speakers contention that only Jehovah is "awe-inspiring"

I always thought this was pretty funny. My mom would tell us not to say lucky, yet if you look up fortunate in the dictionary,it means to have good luck. Also, your fortune is what will happen to you in the future;fate. And a fortuneteller is one who claims to predict your future, something that is clearly(in JW world)demonic.

When I would bring this up to my mother,it would anger her a bit because she had no logical answer to all of this.LOL.

Needless to say,I have no problem myself wishing one "good luck".

This is one of the funniest things I know regarding the JW's. When they make an entirely harmless word taboo, it's just too funny. I can't keep a straight face when a witness tries to explain why they don't use the word "luck". It's hilarious.

And, don't eat Lucky Charms cereal either! We were always told to say "fortunate" instead of "lucky."

Maybe they should call it "Fortunate Charms."

So I understand we get the word "Fortunate" from the Roman goddess Fortuna. She was the goddess of good and bad luck. So why the word "Fortunate" seems to be preferable to "Lucky" God only knows!

Still don't know what's wrong with "Party" as opposed to "Get-Together" to this day.
