Without Gorbachev or Rutherford

What would have happened to the Soviet Union if it was ruled by committee
permanently without any Gorbachev? I think this is worth looking at with regard
    to the Watchtower's future.

How can any reform take place without a Rutherford or Knorr or Fred Franz
in charge? It doesn't take a lot of discernment to see committees leading
    the WTS in contradictory directions.

They dump the blood card. They don't dump the blood card.
They publish a tract for youth recommending Bethel. They cut Bethelites by a thousand.
They tighten up on df'ing. They drop pioneering to 70 hours and publishers to 15 minutes.
Multiple personality syndrome is from the Devil (Service Dept.)
MPS is a real psychological problem Christians must endure (Writing Dept.)
You can vote (conscience). You can't vote (df'd).

Could it be that they will simply downsize, lie, ignore problems, and platitudize
indefinitely? That there will be no defining moment to reverse course?

not a bang but a whimper?

Meta. A subject close to my own peculiar interests.

I read, a long time ago, Eric Hoffers theory about the revolutionary man of words/ The Fanatic/ and the Organization man and equated these three characters with Russell/ Rutherford/ Knorr in Watchtower History. Perhaps though, they demonstrate no more than the PHASES the organization might go through and do nor actually totally represent actual people at all. A movement starts out full of revolutionary promises regarding equality and freedom which ,of course, have no basis in reality. They are Utopian dreams. But a movement is in progress, people are dependant on it, so a man with an Iron fist takes control and builds it into a totalistic machine. Later, an Organization man comes along and streamlines it into a smoothly running, totally closed minded piece of machinery. After this comes gerontocracy. The rule of ancient men. These men are incapable of change or reform, because they have never experienced "reality" and they are too old to change. The system, under them, becomes more and more rigid. Inflexible. With Russia, the system reached a position where it could not go on. That was the ONLY thing that prompted change. Whether it will happen with the WT, who can say? Myself, I think the WT heirachy are such a bunch of prostututes that, when it becomes necessary, they will sell out any "granite principle" any Law of God, to be able to survive as an entity.

They will suck at the teet of "Babylon the Great" willingly.

    Soviet Union without any Gorbachev?

    My two cents

I think Gorbachev was a catalyst, but much of what happened would have occurred without him.

I think one of three things could have happened.

They all start with a collapse of their ability to finance the government and peoples required needs. They would default on loans and therefore would no longer be able to import some of their required goods and services. They could no longer be able to support the Governments that look to them for leadership with the Foreign Aid and Weapons. Their realm of influence would decline until one of three things happened.

    1. The German Model after World War 1. A new Dictator takes control and restores confidence in the National Honor of Mother Russia, similar to Hitler. Then you have stronger but smaller Russia.
    2. The China Model. They realize that Capitalism is not that bad and do what the China has done the past 20 years.
    3. The Argentina Model. The country wastes away with one corrupt Government after the other and loses it position in the World.

For Russia any of the three could still happen, but what about the WTBTS?

I think the committees of the WTBTS will end up with option 2, they will realize certain things are required to survive and attempt to maintain control over the population as long as they can. The lives of people will get better until one day they revolt or Big Brother concedes even more privileges. In China the revolt failed the first time, but now they are leaning toward more freedoms.

They already have done so Refiner's. The recent UN debacle an indication of thier dishonesty.

The origin and organizational family tree of the WTBS is a 'case study' in the making, of how to build and sustain a cult.

What seems to be the key to success in this venture, is simple enough. A mix of bible quotes, with serious prophetic prouncements sprinkled in to maintain interest.......then solidify it all with a no questions asked, believe it or die, policy of enforcement.........voila! a reciepe for the 'true' religion.

Of course having a few colorful character's like Russell, Rutherford, Franz can be an asset as well.

Has something changed with regards to voting? Is it again a DFing offence? And what do you mean publisher reporting 15 minutes? Also I heard a 3 percent increase was reported in U.S. How? A baby boom 15 yrs ago? New methods of reporting?or 9/11 backlash? I'm out of touch.

I have read that management of companies and organizations goes through 4 distinct phases.

The first is Warrior, who conquers to gain power and maintain that mode of governing.

Then the Prophet or the Intellectual who sees the vision to grow

Then the Professional Manager or Organization person who make the organization a run smoothly

And then finally those who Acquire Power without having to actually know how to build or run the organization. They are incapable of any creative thinking to make the company thrive again. They at some point in the future will be replaced by one of the three other manager types. If the collapse is bad enough it starts fresh with a Warrior. If not a total collapse then one of the other types can revitalize the Organization.

I think the WTBTS is under the control of Acquirers, who are not really capable of doing anything to revitalize anything. They are only looking out for their own self interest with new surroundings in upstate New York. Some current Lawyer or Accountant will most likely be the next strong man in New York.

Actually I was just skimming thru David Remnicks "Lenins Tomb" the other week. According to that, Gorbachev was a man who wanted reform of the party. He still believed in Socialism and Leninism. So he was, in a sense, a moderate reformer from the party perspective. A guy like Boris Yeltzin was a different animal. He wanted to tear Leninism down completely as a false edifice. It was interesting that the first move Gorbachev made relative to reform was the opening of the history books. It was viewed as absolutely necessary to expose the true history of Russia, under Stalinism especially, the lies and deception were so massive and extensive that change couldnt be made until the lies were exposed. Easy enough, I suppose, to condemn the sins of people who are long dead and cant argue. Stalin was the ideal scapegoat. After all, noone really LIKED him anyway. But there were unexpected consequences, once the historical revelations began to be revealed, there was no stopping it. The whole thing completely unravelled.

Wouldnt you love to see that with the WT? Special Issue: "The deceptions perpetrated by Brother Rutherford". Special Issue; "What REALLY happened after brother Russell died"
