Do Elders need to study?

Year ago we used to criticize the 'clergy' because we heard that most of them just bought their weekly sermons! (Not true by the way!)

Are JW Elders any different? Only in the fact that they get theirs free from the Society. And any good reader could give them without knowing anything about the Bible. And it better be word for word, no personal comments!

At assemblies quite often a brother would follow the talks/sermons with another outline to see that the speaker did not change a thing. So much for a need to be spiritually mature! I suspect they did not trust their own Elders and still don't. Yep, 2nd class ministers who need to be constantly watched. Yep, you would probably feel right at home in Iraq. The Society 'loves' you like wolves love sheep!

Interesting how the WTS is so paranoid with the teachings that they have someone follow along. No wonder they were boring as hell.

Looking back, I do remember my dad having completely scripted talk outlines.

Good point Outa. The JWs use more canned sermons than any clergyperson of Christendom.

My dad is an Adventist lay preacher and he allways gives his sermons from his own research and doesnt to even tell anyone what he will be preaching about I used to think the witnesses would be doing the same. Barry

I've recently found what a pleasure it is to be able to prepare for sermons.

Just think, no outline to try and deliver. No American idioms to disguise! No false crescendos!

Just a reliance on the Word.

Amazing as it may seem to the Borg, sticking closely to the Bible is not a license to spout personal opinion.

Do elders need to study? Of course! When we were elders, we were ill-equipped for Bible teaching, for counselling, for.......

The Borg's elder arrangement just doesn't work.

Nothing to do with the elder arrangement, for the elders operate on a local level and have nothing to do with the operating of the business.
