In Florida recently the Salvation Army gave back a gift of $100,000.00 because it was donated by a $16,000,000 Florida Lotto winner.
They stated that the money came from gambling and they did not want to be associated with it?
How narrow is that?

Being a religious organization, they cannot accept donations from things considered a "sin" - so at least they are keeping with their religious doctrines (wonder how JW's feel about that? gasp - the horror).
But, it is "narrow minded" - I would agree. Perhaps the person should make his donation through a 3rd party or in smaller increments. That way - they won't be forced to standing up to "moral" principles.
Salvation army hosts alchaholics anonymous and cocaine anonymous meetings and programs. It knows what it's doing.

The whole time the body of SMELLders was plotting to DA my sister for gambling, they were cashing her personal checks. They knew damn well where that money was coming from.
She eventually did write her letter of DA (this was 7 years ago) because she refused to acknowledge that it was wrong for someone in her situation to gamble as entertainment. (No spouse, no kids, no responsibilities going by the wayside because of gambling addiction, etc.)
They stated that it pretty much didn't matter where the money in the contribution box came from, it was a "gift" to "Jehoober."
You are damn skippy the JWs would have kept those checks.

Apparently, the Salvation Army do accept donations from gambling and even direct contributions from casinos. It was just this one leader who decided it was hypocritical to accept it, given their views on gambling. Whatever the case, it's nice to see that some people will stick by their principles even when large sums of money are involved.
And you know that the WTS would accept the donation without blinking.
