This has probably been discussed on this forum hundreds of times - my excuse is that I am fairly new.
I have a friend who has decided to listen to me as regards why I do not go to many meetings any more. I mentioned the 607 BCE for Babylon's destruction but could not remember where the 'Society' get the date from. Can anyone help me? I know some of you will say they just counted back from 1914 etc, but I have read that they get the date from Jeremiah, Isaiah or Daniel or something. Can anyone help me? Also, can anyone tell me what I can say to her to refute the 607 date?

It covers the 607 date excellently taking into account the societys own reasoning, which I believe, at least in the Insight Volume was researched by Ray Franz. Who later confessed in his book COC about what lengths he had to go to, to try and prove the date when everything pointed against it. (Hope I didn't get confused about that)
The person responsible for 99% of the research behind this page is Carl Olof Jonsson. His book The Gentile Times Reconsidered (Commentary Press, Atlanta, 1986), which unfortunately is out of print, contains the most extensive and exhaustive discussion of this topic available.

For a number of us in Oz, reading this in COC was the "final straw", confirming our doubts and easing us out of belief in the Borg's control.
This was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. 607 BCE is an outright lie. Pure doublespeak, to coin Orwell. There is literally not one shred of historical evidence to prove this whatsoever, as it is totally incorrect, and therefore unprovable! And without 607 as a correct date, 1914 has no prophetic significance whatsoever either. Think about that!
The British Museum Web site shows the 586-587 BCE dates, too. Keep in mind that the Babylonians kept thousands of records of business transactions on clay tablets and cylinders. Kinda like the Internet in clay, if you know what I mean.

JW mathematics are great arn't they? I wish I could balance my checkbook like they set dates for history. I'd be a very wealthy man, I'd convince the bank that I actually have a few million in there because I read it on a clay tablet written thousands of years ago, yeah thats it...and me and my buddies think that I should have a few million in there. No! I got an even better one. God said so!
They just pull numbers out of a hat an then decide on which one they can corroboate with other made up numbers.
Just remember that the world should have ended in 1975, and guess what we are all still here and Jehovah is still as invisible and impotent as he has always been.
