American Dominance.

Isn't it strange that the worlds only super power - America - doesn't actually govern over an empire?

I mean, think about it, how many countries has America subdued by force and then proceeded to permanently occupy?

According to my limited knowledge of history, it must be the only World power ever to be able to dominate the planet without actually occupying another country.

    Very good point Englishman

Unlike the British Empire, the US didn't occupy much

    I just found this http://www.ilaam.net/Sept11/AmericanWars.html

The former Soviet Union was also a SuperPower, and they occupied lots of lands

The red part of the map shows how much of the planet that was once occupied by Britain:

It's interesting to note that the US's dominance has been achieved using totally different methods.

Although the US may be the worlds richest country and has most powerful army, it does not and could not really dominate the world. No country ever has had this ability.

If the rest of the world wanted to gang up together theres not much that she could do except use nuclear force which other countries would have to use also, and bang there goes the world.

We have found a different way to subjegate other countries to our will, economics. We may not be occupying allot of land as compared to other empires but our reach is far longer and just as devastating. Also, by not occupying a country we pretty much control we get a pseudo sense of morality in our descisions. We don't have to physically be there to murder innocents like in days past we have others do that for us. Our country operates on plausible deniability and self rightous hypocrisy.
