Do you know of any other religions that tear families apart like the J.W's? Jesus said that families would be torn apart because of his name.

Does this make them the true religion because they are tearing families apart, like Jesus said they would?

The families of witnesses are destroyed because of a false religion. Nothing to do with what Jesus said.

There are many instances in history where religion tore families apart. The Catholics vs. Protestants, a jew who becomes a Christian may be shunned by his family. There are also circumstances that had nothing to do with religion - the civil war for example.

Edited to add: If you read Jesus' remarks in context - I believe he was speaking to the Jews at that time - a Jew who accepted Jesus as the messiah may be in combat with the rest of his family who did not believe Jesus was the messiah.

This is a good point, but it still leaves us non-believers out in the cold.

I find it odd that despite the fact that I told my family that I am willing to respect their belief in their god, yet at the same time, they are not willing to respect my non-belief.

I wish there was a way for me to get through to them. Any ideas out there?

When Jesus discussed persecution, he wasn't telling his followers to persecute OTHER PEOPLE, he was warning them

about what others would do to them. Breaking up families was a reaction that had to be faced, not a goal for Christians

    to pursue!

All this NONSENSE would evaporate if the Watchtower leadership STOPPED LYING about DF'ing. They knew in the

1980's that the proper Christian response is to 'admonish' and NOT treat such ones as enemies.

My mother used to quote Thomas Jefferson to me all the time, when I was a kid. I learned a few years ago, that he was an atheist.

Anyway, Thomas J. also had a great quote during the early days of this country, "A man should be just as free to leave an organization (club, association, etc), as he was to join it." I told her that the other day, and it kind of left her speechless. Of course she finally said that of course we are free to leave. So I said "without sanctions?" No comment.

Of course the person you repeat this to, has to have a great respect for Thomas Jefferson.

I understand that the Mormans are just as bad as the JW for shunning ex memebers. Also some Muslim sects are not allowed to leave their religion without the threat of death.
