Ya know how sometimes you'll have a nice black, or very dark navy cotton shirt, and when you wash it, it has faded a bit, but there will be some dark spots where for some reason it didn't fade? What causes that?

I have no idea, but if you add some vinegar to your rinse water, the dark colors stay dark better.

If some undiluted liquid fabric softener got on the clothes before they were submerged in the rinse water, dark areas may result. I've also seen softener sheets that left a mark in the dryer when they got trapped against the fabric.

Did you pack the washer really full? If so, maybe the shirt was twisted and parts of it never even got wet... hence, the color was retained in that spot. I've had that happen, like when I cram my comforter into the washer. It's really too big for it, but parts of it don't even get wet, lol, so I usually run it through twice.
Also, for darks, you probably know to always use cold water only. And never put darks in the dryer either. Just let them air-dry. Hot water and hot dryers will fade fade fade colors.
Home Ec, lol. I flunked it in 9th grade. 8)

Are there like 3 (or more) possible interpretations in everything you write,
