Had to watch a video. They give you a type of card which can be used in the credit card terminals at grocery store. The video was common sense things like don't loan your card out, separate your food from non food items. Call and see how much is in your account before going to the store. this makes it a bit more discreet to use food stamps as the people behind you will think it is a credit card or debit card.

The social worker said it usually takes a couple weeks to get everything to go through but she would try to get ours through sooner.

She also said there was rise in people needing help in our area. The parking lot and waiting room were filled.

Tried to get ads for the past two days. Everyone is having a hard time and they don't have the money for advertising. I'm wondering if it is possible that this area is actually in a depression while other areas are in a recession.

I have to talk to the manager of the local grocery store tomorrow about the checker job. The hardware store said they might have a job for my husband in another month.

    Gotta Go

    Hey Sadie,

It sucks being unemployed. It was over 20 years ago for me, but I'll never forget it. Hope all works out for you.

Sadie. Been watching your posts with interest. You're doing the right things. Do not get discouraged. My wife and I are rooting for you. Calamityjane says...don't take no for an answer. Re a job for husband.....the squeaky wheel gets the oil ! Do not let up on the manager about the checker job. Truth is he may be youger than your husband, but if he has any brains, he could use a mature person " on the team".

    Hey Sadie:

When I first came to the board, I was out of work. It was the first time I had been out of work since I graduated high-school. Boy, that sure was a tough time in my life. Seems like ages ago though. Things will get better, just keep trying and I'm pretty sure something will come along.

'Round my way we call that food stamp card the Ghetto Visa. When I was young I used to be ashamed to go to the store with my grandma's food stamps. In hindsight, that was like being ashamed to eat. Which is stupid and immature. Foodstamps are a good thing for ppl who need em. Nothing wrong at all with eatin.

I remember a time when my hubby was out of wrok for 1.5 years and i was unable to work for various reasons. i will never forget the electric co. turning off our "air" during a hot texas summer. I sat on the unit as they switched off the power. I'll never forget the look on the workers face, he was so ashamed to have to do it. We survived. But it was hard. And then there was begging for food. I sat in a room with "threats" as i call them, from the Bible, plastered all over the walls. I followed every lead i could to get hand outs and help to pay the bills. Eventually all things come to an end. So it did, and i will always remember. Hugs for u and your family.

Sadie...and that's OK! I have been to the depths myself...but let me tell you this! How long have you or your parents or randparents held a job and paid into the federal coffers? They did that so you and others could fall back and have some help in time of need. I've collected food stamps when finally all I had to eat for a day was a Ramen noodle pack and a Jungle Juice drink for dinner. As long as you are truly in need and don't abuse the system then do use your benefits without guilt. Spend frugally at the grocery store, but buy yourself one yummy food item when you can that is your fave. Just for yourself. It helps....I know...

    Sincerely,

    District Overbeer

I used to get embarrassed as a kid whenever I got sent in the store with food stamps. But it's just the same as money.

I'd make a run through the store and zip through the checkout and the cashier would always have to make an annoucement that I was paying with FOOD STAMPS.

I also remember the WIC for baby sis. I remember all the Juicy Juice.

The thing that always made me bow my head in shame was when they'd take the food away that we weren't allowed to get in front of everybody. People watching as they picked through the shopping cart and taking food out.

But I'm still thankful... food is food and you godda eat to live.
