Here's an angle I don't see explored much:
What if it's not about weapons of mass destruction, or oil, or terrorism,
or imperialism, or distracting from the economy, or winning reelection, or
avenging Daddy, or discouraging rogue regimes, or any of that.
What if it's about Hebrew & early Christian mythology?
George W. Bush is the most superstitious and anti-rational president since
Reagan, and there's some indication that his Christianity is far more
literal, in earnest, and apocalyptic in nature than Reagan's folksy
American Rustic Homily version.
He's packed the White House with a breed of Christian politician who don't
see Christianity as just a nice thing to have on the flag pole during
campaign season, but as an earthly mission in support of a supernatural
being at a critical time - as our world enters the ultimate stage of
fulfillment of ancient prophecy.
These people show all the signs of not merely /saying/ they believe that
the creation myths of the Old Testament and hallucinations of John are or
will be historical fact, but actually /believing/ that the most critical
source of information on how the world works and what is happening in it
can be found on bedside tables in motels everywhere.
You can bet that as the intelligence reports come into cabinet meetings and
other White House round tables that many of those around the table are
working out one-to-one correspondences in their heads between what they
read there, and what John dreamed up in the Bible's own Revolution #9

What if the U.S. is going to war, not against Saddam Hussein's Iraq, but
against Babylon - and not for the oil, or to knock out Hussein's own
ambitions, but to eliminate one of the Antichrist's likely allies and to
establish a solid base from which to launch our defense of the one true god
in the coming end times?
Just a thought.

Could be. One thing that surprised me, during my christian phase was the organised way that many protestant churches were instructed to give sermons on who to vote for, just prior to elections. This was highly organised, yet hidden from non church goers. Using babylon the grape imagery as war motivation wouldn't be out of character for fundies.
