ISRAEL AND THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES: AFTER 10 YEARS' IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT MORDECHAI VANUNU MUST BE RELEASED IMMEDIATELY.

Amnesty International is again calling for the immediate release of Mordechai Vanunu as the 10th anniversary of his arrest and solitary confinement approaches.

“Mordechai Vanunu has been held alone in a cell for 10 years which is cruel, inhuman and degrading. He is suffering mental health problems and he still does not know when he will be released,” Amnesty International said today.

“Any military secrets he may know would be 10 years out of date. Other secrets that the Israeli authorities appear not to want him to reveal relate to his kidnapping. He has suffered enough abuse and should be immediately released.”

Mordechai Vanunu was abducted by agents of the Israeli Government, in Italy on 30 September 1986, and secretly taken to Israel. He had provided classified information about the Atomic Research Reactor at Dimona where he had worked from 1977 to 1985 to the British newspaper The Sunday Times. The information was published on 5 October 1986 and indicated that Israel was running a major nuclear military program.
Once he had been taken to Israel Mordechai Vanunu was held in secret detention -- the Israeli authorities did not admit holding him until 9 November 1986. He was tried and convicted on charges of treason and aggravated espionage. He was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment. His trial and appeal before the Supreme Court were held in camera. Since then, appeals to the Supreme Court have also been shrouded with secrecy. Mordechai Vanunu has been imprisoned in solitary confinement in Ashkelon Prison for 10 years. He has a further eight years' imprisonment to serve. In meetings with Amnesty International delegates in February 1996, Israeli Government officials, including the then Minister of Justice, stated that Mordechai Vanunu could not be released now because they fear he may yet reveal secrets.

    Some further info on this

Mordecai is still in prison now. He had a parole hearing a few weeks ago and it was argued by the Israel government that he still knew secrets that would be dangerous to the country if they were made known and so his parole request failed. Very unlikely he would ,of course, know any new material re Israels nuclear capability.

Israel's policy is one of nuclear 'ambiguity'.....i.e. they do not confirm or deny their nuclear status.

In the past they have tried to conceal facts relating to the Dimona plant. In the 1960s Pres Kennedy sent inspectors to the country. The plant at Dimona was subject to alteration so the inspectors saw a fake control room that had the appearance of a power plant, the seven floors below were plastered/blocked off. They went home having seen a fake control room and not the control room of a plutonium reprocessing plant.

In 1969 signed Nixon and Israel's PM signed an agreement that the US would never ask and Israel would never have to declare its nuclear status.

Israel is not party to anti-nuclear proliferation agreements or any agreements that govern chemical or biological weapons.

There have been allegations that Israel has in the past used such weapons. There have been allegations that Israel has poisoned wells with Cholera/typhoid.

In 2001 Israel used a nerve gas agent that doctors in Gaza had not treated before. They could not get any info from the Israelis. It was not like anything they had come across in its symptoms.

There have been no investigations into any misdemeanours.

Yea, he spied for the enemy. He was tried before the Jerusalem District Court and convicted of aiding the enemy in time of war, of giving secret information with the intent to harm the security of the state and of the gathering of secret information with the intent of harming the security of the state.

He was sentenced to prison for 18 years, starting from the date of his arrest on the 7th October 1986. The appeal that was submitted to the Supreme Court was rejected in Criminal Appeal no. 172/88 (44(3) P.D. 265).

Now the peace nicks and left wing Islimo-Fascist’s have made him the new poster boy. If he was in Iraq, he would have been shot!

    For love and money
    By Uri Dan
(December 2) - During Mordechai Vanunu's pretrial interrogation here, one point of contention between the GSS interrogator and the nuclear traitor was how much money Vanunu had demanded from The Sunday Times for the secrets he had stolen from the nuclear reactor in Dimona where he worked.

The investigator said bluntly: "You sold your country for £1,000."

    Vanunu corrected him: "$100,000."

George Bernard Shaw is quoted as having said to a lady that it wasn't her profession that was in doubt, but her price.

In Vanunu's case, too, there is no doubt as to his profession - treason for monetary gain - as shown by the trial protocols published in part last week.

In 1986, he negotiated with The Sunday Times how much he would be paid for Israel's defense secrets. For a moment, Vanunu thought he had finally gotten lucky. Not only had he made a lot of money, but Cindy, an American blonde, had fallen in love with him one night in London, when he ran into her by chance in Leicester Square.

What more does a man need? He had both money and an attractive woman who was promising him a good time in Italy. He rushed off to Rome with her, straight into the arms of the Mossad, which brought him here under orders of the then prime minister, Shimon Peres.

It was quite by chance, and at the last minute, that the Mossad succeeded in locating Vanunu. Only when he was already handcuffed did it become clear to him that he had fallen into a trap that he had set for himself, caught between Cindy's honey enticements and The Sunday Times' lure of huge sums. Cindy, the gifted Mossad agent who succeeded in bringing the traitor to justice, deserves a medal.

I have highlighted these details in view of the massive publicity the partial protocols of Vanunu's trial received last week, providing an additional opportunity for Vanunu's defenders to demand a one-third reduction of his 17-year sentence.

Over the years, there has been a campaign of lies by professional leftists in Israel, aided by peaceniks in Europe and the US, to create a new image for Vanunu as a man of conscience whose sole concern was the proliferation of nuclear weapons throughout the world in general, and in Israel in particular.

Some of Israel's media and some of its politicians have helped spread disinformation about this money-grubbing traitor and womanizer. In the darkness of Leicester Square, Cindy's seductive smile was enough to make Vanunu, the man of conscience, forget his battle against the proliferation of nuclear weapons and run after her to Rome. It was as simple as that.

The attempt by some Jews to turn Vanunu into a martyr is a clear result of a genetic, or perhaps a mental, aberration. These Jews really believe that the tiny state of Israel can defend itself in the Middle East without nuclear weapons.

In their stupidity and blindness they really believe that peace is just round the corner and so not only should Vanunu be released, but Israel should also renounce its nuclear capability. That is just what the Egyptians, with their peasant cunning, hope will happen.

Saddam Hussein, the Iranians, the Syrians, and even the Egyptians will continue to secretly develop nonconventional weapons. Meanwhile, they demand that Israel give up its ultimate defense immediately.

In fact, all the delusions of peace in Israel have caused everything to go haywire. Not only are Jews and Israelis rushing, legally and openly, to adviseYasser Arafat on how to outmaneuver the government or Israel during the fateful negotiations and to provide him with vital inside information. Israeli Arabs are also running to Damascus, to the enemy Hafez Assad, to advise him on how to obtain the Golan Heights, as a first step toward the "liberation of Galilee."

Such a climate of treason can be created so easily only in a society blind to its real defense situation, in an unstable, directionless society lacking in leadership. A society that destroys its real heroes and rewrites its own history. It then finds a new hero: "the man in the iron mask," as Mordechai Vanunu was called this week. A hero who is nothing but a traitor.

So what was the big deal?

Was it secrets? Nope all he had was some photos and some knowledge. Nothing else. It was because Israel lied about the nature of the plant. When it comes to weapons of mass destruction, governments that lie about their capabilities etc are not good, right? Deserve what they get? Well thats the yardstick we are using for Iraq.

You are rewriting history. This man is a traitor, not a hero, as your propaganda suggests. Israel's defense secrets are not a minor "thing" as you suggest.

This traitor did it for money. This traitor got captured because he could not keep his wang in his paints. Your claims are untrue and baseless. He should have been shot.

""It was because Israel lied about the nature of the plant"""

Not true, Israel neither confirmed nor denied the existence. That’s what defense information is all about, right? Remember, Israel was attacked from all sides back in 1967. Please put this into perspective.
