I've Started Studying With a JW...

I’ve started a bible study. My cousin (63 yrs. Old by the way) is very well versed in his scripture. He is a Jehovah’s Witness. Though for many years he was labeled an apostate because he knew his bible better than they Elders did and would challenge them on things that were not scriptural. He is baptized and still attends meetings. Though he doesn’t bother himself with privileges. He believes that is not your title in the congregation that determines your level of spirituality.

Last night I went to the hospital because my aunt, his mother, had a heart attack. My entire family was there. Half of the JW family sat on one side of the waiting room and barely acknowledged me. The other half of my JW family was friendly and talkative. After a couple hours of course the religion issue got brought up. All the issues with the JWs that I have he agreed with. Then he showed me several scriptures from the King James Bible. He asked me if I would like to meet him for him to address my concerns. I told him no way. He said he would not use any of the Society’s publications, and he would only use the King James Bible. So I’ve decided it cant hurt to argue the bible with him. And I respect his viewpoint. It’s been so long too since I’ve read any scriptures; it’s hard to remember some of my arguments. I trust those will all come back soon enough

Anyway. Don’t preach to me about it. Just wanted to let you all know that I plan on keeping you updated about the things we discussed.

Who decides the topic of study? I mean, if it is the trinity thing, or the hellfire thing, or the end times thing, he has a captive audience to spread the negative WT message. (Trinity and Hellfire are anti-doctrines, not what the WT believes in.) Anybody can say anything they want about the end-times. None of it is provable until after it happened already.

There are plenty of things the WT glosses over. A good, proper study could be of a single book, like Hebrews or Romans. Then all the text can be studied in context and the full meaning can be gathered. Another meaninful study would be on how Jehovah expects Christians to behave. Starting with John 3:16 for example.

Careful with that argument. I have a friend who is trying to do that right now with a jw, and they can manipulate that bible just as well as they can manipulate their own.

Given the history of your uncle... and his past "rebel" ways... I would take a chance to see what HE has to say... who knows... maybe you two would agree more than you think... and like bikerchic said... maybe he'll become an apostate... :)

Chevy, I just can't picture how such a study would get started. Even without a WTS publication, the JW will take the JW approach to a bible study. I don't think it matters too much as to who picks the topic. [the following logic 'lifted' from Ray Franz] A dubbie thinks it makes perfect sense to tie 'Matthew Chapter this' to 'Daniel verse that' as though the scriptures were written in some cosmic form of a jigsaw puzzle. It is how they approach it. They tink that the word of God was set down for some priviledged few to interpret and mete out to the rest of us as they see fit.

I can say this, if I was to sit with a JW, I would let them cite a scripture. But then I would get ahold sf some readily available bible commentary and discuss the context. I would read the surrounding verses and the entire chapter. I would first make the dubbie defend their choice of the scripture, given its context. Then I would challenge them to make the connections they claim are there. They would fail, abysmally.

I don't think I've ever met a dubbie that could tell why a certain book was written, or what Paul's ideas of community were. Tehy look at the elephant from 4 inches away, and have no idea of what they see.

That is how I've argued the bible with them in the past. When they pick and choose one verse to site as a reasoning for something, I say 'well, lets first look at the verse directly before and after it. Let's read the entire chapter. What exactly was this verse in reference to?' I was the best at picking out small parts of a verse to make it fit my point. I know that trick all too well. In fact, you could use a small part of virtually any scripture and twist it to fit your point.

I think he welcomes the challenge to pursuade me. I greatly respect him as a person as well as his bible knowledge, so I do plan on being somewhat open minded to what he has to say.
