If you've made a start that's good. Is difficult to appreciate exactly why the region is so afflicted today without an appreciation of the role of the Ottoman empire and its collapse and the mess that Britain and France made of its end after WW1.
Of course, there are other players, but the Ottoman empire is a good place to start.
