I understand that marriage ceremonies only truly got off the grounds in 1754 when the marriage act came in2 force,it was a way of the churches(shades of BABYLON THE GREAT,every1!)2 maintain a monopoly of the marriage market, previously a lot of people simply exchanged vows etc.

In view of the Bababylian(sp?)connection ,should a jw take part in a marriage ceremony?

Jesus attended a wedding feast in Cana; are we to understand that there was no wedding ceremony prior to the feast? Perhaps specific styles of ceremonies developed over the centuries from religion, but there have been wedding ceremonies of one sort or another for more than 500 years, even if those ceremonies amounted to little more than an exchange of vows. In fact, stripped down to their essence, that's still all that marriage ceremonies are. Everything else is just for entertainment purposes.

I haven't wondered about the ceremony as much as some of the customs that are followed or not followed. JWs don't throw rice. Not that it's bad for birds but because of some pagan connection centuries ago. Rings are exchanged. It's explained that it's to show that these people are spoken for. But if I remember correctly, wedding ring usage has a pagan background. The father gives the bride away. The bride wears white(usually). But they have to march in and out to recorded kingdom melodies. Why can't the Wedding March be used? Or some other piece of classical music? The bride does not throw her flowers to the ladies in waiting. Why not? Pagan? I'm sure there are other things but I can't remember them right now. It does make one wonder though.

Isn’t THAT, the real reason we get married? To get stripped down to our essence!

No, no, no - that's AFTER the marriage ceremony!
