  When I was growing up, some people were on welfare but the vast majority were working people that paid their own rent, doctor’s bills, medicine, food, etc. —And saved money. So, a working person did not need financial help from the government if they didn’t have vices

  Nowdays, at lot of people are getting some form of financial help from the government. In fact, they depend on government help. I mean even working people that can’t make enough money for medical or rent. It appears that if the government stopped subsidizing people, there are so many that there would be a crisis with riots in the streets and possibly a revolution. Maybe I’m wrong in my observations but the government is making things so that people need to depend on government.

  In addition it seems the government is doing this in an attempt to prop up our consumer based society which is an unsustainable model. It is an exercise in keeping the zombie walking. That is to say, the consumer based societies of the world are like an animated, rotting corpse.

  I think the elite are alright with this because if the bottom falls out our fiat currency will be totally worthless. Then everyone one will be equally destitute.

  Maybe companies need to pay people more! Then they could pay their own way. Someone I know married a social worker (with a college degree). He never made more than $35,000 a year. Shameful. Even Walmart, with billions in profits, pay people a pittance. Full time workers needing government help. Also, though, some people need to learn how to handle the money they do make, and learn to live within their means. If you work at McDonalds, don’t buy designer purses!

  I don't know what MCDonald's people earn...but let's say you work 40 hours a week for $15 ( and I think that is high for this area for any non professional and even some professionals at the end of the day ) So you make 600 week and I will say take home less 20% = $480 x 4 = $1920 a month. The average apartment rent here ( I just looked it up )is $1464 a month. ( you are right-no designer purses! ) if you keep the utilities on, I guess you are going to the food bank. This is a pity...working people need the gov. subsidy... here is a personal fact- I have a small business. It beats minimum wage, but not welfare...People on welfare have it better than I do.

  Let everyone not forget for one minute that millions of jobs disappeared and the far reaching effects that resulted. This happened since the 1960s - and under both political parties no matter who was in office.

  Many jobs went overseas and this should not have been allowed to happen.

  This is the reason for the economy being the way it is now. A ‘gig’ economy with no benefits? Don’t make me laugh.

  Nobody really began to notice though until recent decades when even call centers went overseas. I’m sorry for younger people starting out in life..This is so unfair.

  True. The bright side, at least if you're in your 20's, is that there are lots of single people in the same boat so finding roomates is not too hard.

  No idea if this is actually true or just one of those anecdotes you read, but supposedly in many countries parents don't have this bizarre expectation that the kids need to punted out the door as soon as they graduate. Work, Yes. But I think maybe they see the wastefulness of someone in an entry level job pouring most of their paycheck into rent and therefore unable to save much of anything to buy something of their own. It becomes a trap.

  I was a fairly devoted conservative till I did some travelling in the developing world. People say things like the invisible hand of capitalism will lead to prosperity and tax cuts seem to be the be all end all solution to everything. All I saw was people who paid no taxes and who received no services. The very epitome of what unbridled capitalism is. Of course there was a very few ultra rich but mostly poor. Really really poor.

  Wanting a progressive tax system and a social contract doesn't make you woke or a communist.
