Have you seen the Truman Show with Jim Carey? If not rent it, it is a great movie.

The org created a world for us just like that in the Movie. What was true to Jim Carey is what they allowed him to see. Until he saw his father (who was supposedly dead) he had no need or desire to go outside the world they created for him.

Everyone, you have to see this movie if you haven't already. For those of you who seen it I would love to hear your comments.

I could go on and on about this movie and make comparisons, but I want to hear what you all have to say about it.

Spot on Sandy! I had similar thoughts when I saw the movie, creepy isnt it. The fact that he was watched all the time by others is similar too. The old Orwells 1984 film and the Stepford wifes always remind me of JWism.

Yes! I love that movie for that reason.

I have thought the same thing since the first time I saw it. I loved the way the "apostates" (fans intruding in on the set) kept popping in trying to tell him that it was all fake and nothing was real. He would always look at them dumbfounded and confused... like we would do when we saw one of these "crazy apostates". There was also the way people would disappear (DFed) when they would not follow the rules... like the girl he fell in love with.

The most moving part was the end when "the creator" kept begging him not to leave... like the JWs did when I was DAing myself. They told me I was destroying my safe and perfect life (where else could I go???)... what they did not realize is that my life began the moment I walked through the door at the end of the ocean.

I couldn't agree more. Notice how in the back of his mind he had a nagging, persistent doubt that something wasn't right but he didn't know what it was? That's how I felt as a JW. And that whole Stepford Wives thing always gave me the creeps. The - We're all living in Disney land, ain't life perfect, don't you love being perfect sister, we're so much better than everyone else because we're perfect mentality. And the most elaborate denial system even Freud would envy. Thank God we're out! - Victorian Sky

    LOL Sandy!

I went out and bought the movie about three years ago when I was making my EXIT too. I like the end where Truman has to make a choice between continuing to live in the perfect "truth" that was given to him and the real truth. He chooses freedom, with all its problems and challenges over the "perfect" life he had.

I really liked the part when he begins to question and open his eyes. He notices that everything was just too peachy to be real. Oh and the part when his apostate girlfriend tries to tell him the truth. I totally related re my sister. And the music in the background was perfect. I'm gonna watch it later on now that you made me remember.

Yes, The Truman Show became a sort of anthem to me as I was leaving. The most inspiring aspect of it was the manner in which the title character gradually gained the emotional strength to overcome the fears which had been implanted in him by those who wished to control him. He had to learn to trust his intuition and his own mind, instead of the disinformation which was served up to him pre-digested and tailored to keep him in bondage. He had to overcome the influence of well-meaning 'friends', who were in fact, also under manipulations of the controlling entity. It was a triumph of the human spirit to have a free mind, and it is a great movie too. truman

Without their created spectacle that they can tell everyone about, the producers (gb) wouldn't be needed - they'd have to find someone else then - to hang onto to keep their gloried positions.

They create their own need for themselves, by using someone.
