Do Dubs believe In Arranged Marriages?

I recall that they once advocated arranged marriages. This would be in the 60's when they were having a phase of dire warnings about the suitability of marriage partners. During this phase, many odd ideas surfaced. These included:

*Not having sexual relations on the wedding night as a sign of respect, also living at home and sleeping separately for the first few days.

*Still retaining a child-like obedient attitude to one's parents even after marriage.

*Saying a prayer of thanks just before nookies commenced.

*Allowing one's parents to suggest a suitable mate whilst the WT also pointed out the high success rate of arranged marriages.

Anyone here got the WT's that promoted the ideas above?

A couple who accept and follow the Bible also will join together in prayer regularly. (1 Pet. 4:7) Think how strengthening it is for husband and wife to be physically and emotionally close as they humbly pray to God for help and mercy. Interestingly, regarding home violence, New York psychologist S. Didato wrote:

"I often tell couples on their wedding night to pray. If they get into this habit, I believe, it is much harder for them to commit violence."

Hmmm, I thought the thanksgiving prayer was supposed to be after the nuptials???

I knew a young couple that married at the encourgement of their paretns b/c they were both pioneers. neither were very physically attracted to each other, ( one of the moms confided in me that they were having problems). they were both just pioneers and it was thought it would be good if they marired and served jehovah together. I see them occ, and can see they are not happy. They both look like they are waiting to be happy.

The cong generally thought the parents were wrong for encourging this, and many said so.

wednesday, that's an interesting experience, and at elast it's good to see that the jws in the congregation were aware that such an arranged marriage was not a good idea. Unfortunately, of course, the couple had already been pressured into it by other jws, in that case the parents. Interesting.

Actually many cultures have arranged marraiges, Japan, China, India, and many countries in Africa. The WTS does not object as long as it results in 2 JWs being united. The WTS has commented on JW and non-JW parents selecting "worldy" people as mates, usually due to economic choices. A bride price can be paid to the woman's family by the groom and his family or a dowry to the groom and his family. The only concern the WTS has is if the price is too high and either the groom or the bride neglect meetings and the ministry to earn the money.

As a woman I find arranged marriages and bride prices/dowries take away personal choice from women. Some cultures train it into young men and women that their parents are to make this choice. Obviously, I did not grow up in such a culture. Since I see no evidence of arranged marriages in Christian times, I can't understand why the WTS continues to allow them. But then the WTS bases much of what they teach on the Law code and the the Law of love from Christ.

i hear reports that they dangle goodlooking brothers in front of sisters who fall in love with them then snatch them away telling them they are already engaged or married. then the sister all pent up and ready for marriage has anumber of brothers thrust at her and to escape scandal of trying to steal someone elses boyfriend when they put him in front of her to begin with she just picks one she hardly knows and is quite bitter.
