She wouldn't call him 'Janice.'

I was thinking of a relative on my Mom's side of the family.....

When I was a young girl, about 10 or 11, way to young to perceive 'alternate lifestyles,' we had an experience in family.

My mom's uncle (I'll call him Jack, cause I can't remember his real name) came to my Grandmother's house while we were visiting. This time he came dressed as a woman!

My aunt quickly ushered the children out of the room up the stairs. (of course we eavesdropped....) 'Jack' then went on to say how he felt he had been 'living a lie' and that he thought God made a mistake, he was really a woman. And he was living his life as that woman, whom he called 'Janice.' (I have NO idea if he was transgendered or not, btw) He asked everyone to please start calling him 'Janice'.

It was quiet for a while, until my mother announced that as far as she was concerned, he was still Jack and the way Jehovah created him was how she was going to treat him. I think she had a few other words for him, but the message loud and clear, was that AS A JW I REFUSE TO TOLERATE YOUR DIFFERENT LIFESTYLE. JEHOVAH HAS GIVEN ME PERMISSION TO CAST JUDGEMENT AND TELL YOU THAT YOU WILL DIE AT ARMEGEDDON! and so on. You get the picture.

I never saw him/her again. I guess the pain was just too much. Imagine that, he wasn't even JW and his life was negatively affected by JW judgementalism.

Hmm... "Kiss my a** you pretensive psycho-bi***!!!" is something that comes to mind almost immediately as I imagine myself in a dress looking at my sister(s). (yuck, there goes my appetite, then again, I have no sexual "disposition" if you want to call it that).

    ianao,

Funny. "You asshole" is the first thing coming to my mind when I read your comment.

I agree. It's a real shame when someone judges another by "God's Hand (TM)" just because they are born with different feelings/emotions than folks usually have.

It's typical black&white thinking all over that allows the oppressed to become the oppressor.

    JanH is right.

"Kiss my ass you pretensive asshole!!!" would be more fitting for words from the mouth of Janice.

In our world, you guys are both right. But this is the world of JW, where Jehovah personally calls JW and gives them permission to be the most judgemental people on the face of the earth, all in his name!

At the time, her sisters were impressed (!) with her 'strength' in Jehovah. Of course, none of them were even married at 40+ years old, and my mother was married to an elder! which pretty much makes her words, by default, spoken on behalf of Jehovah!

ps-ianao, isn't it 'pretentious'? I'm not joking, I've never heard the word pretensive but you're not a dumb guy, so do share....

It's called, making up the word when you can't remember the real one. An idiot's tactic when he's too lazy to think-through his silly language.

Also, be careful calling me "not dumb", as others will surely scold you for your poor judgement.

    ianao,

don't be so hard on yourself, my man. i looked up the word 'pretensive' and it showed it can be used as a variation of the word 'pretense.'

your rationale did make me laugh, though. nice work.

I'd say it was selfish and damned thoughtless of Jack/Janice to turn up in drag and announce his decision this way. What, he was expecting this development to be greeted with open arms when he suddenly sprung it on them this way?

Granted, Jack needs room to live the way he feels, and it would be good if his family could accept him and love him that way. But he knew, or at least should have known, what the reaction would be. The news could have been conveyed gently, kindly, without the blatant in-your-face fanfare of showing up at their house in drag.

Sounds like losers all around, to me.
