I was reading some old posts from years ago and ran into this one by past member Richard:

I did a google search and the book referred to is now available for free on the link below. Just hit the pdf link on the right. The author was in for 14 years and full-time for 5 (CO?)

Thanks for the reminder about that book. I remember reading that book back in 1999 and it was a real eye opener.

This is so painful for me to read. I only read to page 18.

All the books and articles he shows and quotes from, were the brainwashing material and emotional manipulation tactics we all received and used. I believed those books. I went door to door thinking I was bringing salvation with a reward in paradise for all who would listen and convert. I was a true Believer.

Now all of those books are to be thrown away because they have "old light" and are not valued anymore.

What of all of the decades of our lives spent spreading JW..org's now, useless garbage?

So many wasted years. So many wasted life's. So many of life's decisions based on WT's lies.

The man who wrote this book states he was born in 1936 in England. He would be 82 now. I hope he is well and has lived a good life away from WT.

Yes I’ve got this book. It suffered somewhat because it prematurely predicted the collapse of JWs over the 1975 date. But in other ways it was a good book from a relatively high profile defector.

Another old book well worth checking out is “Millions Now Living Will Never Die: A Study of Jehovah’s Witnesses” by Alan Rogerson.

I was in the JWs for eleven years. When I left (I was presiding overseer in the late 70's) I did so, carefully as I had some experience of JWs who quit and lost their families (one man I knew came home and the local congregation had, on his wife's behalf, moved furniture into her new - secret - home).

But my family did leave with me, and I too thought that the 1975 debacle would EITHER mark the end of The Organisation OR, just possibly, they would become more main stream.

    Neither has happened.

Indeed if you speak to them today (many opportunities here in the UK because they now stand on street corners) they still spout JW prophecy and mock those who thought the end would come in 1975. They claim it was never Watchtower teaching. But my memory suggests that there was an issue of The Awake (Oct 1968ish???) that said that the end MUST come in mid-1970's.
