Will time spent as a Jehovahs witness always have a disabling effect on a persons life, does the very existence of the WTBTS cause us to feel wounded?

Is it a good idea to blame the WTBTS for the negative impact that it has had on our lives, or will their come a point when the experience ultimately proves to be character-building?

If the experience does eventually engender a form of emotional intelligence within us, does this mean that we must start to think about actually forgiving all those JW's who handed out to us their own special form of emotional abuse?

Just a few points that I'm pondering over. My apologies to Simon for the title.

    Hi Englishman,

Good thoughts to consider. Do we want to give any more time to WTS by becoming unduly occupied with them?

However, is it necessary to forgive someone in order to get on with our life? No, I don't think so. Forget yes, forgive no.

One can recognize the injustice and overcome the damage without giving undeserved forgiveness. Isn't that just a misconstrued concept by the churches?

Would it be necessary for Hitler to be forgiven in order to overcome the hurt? I don't think so.

There are plenty of constructive ways to move on in one's life but unwarranted forgiveness is not one of them. Shouldn't there be a sincere "I'm sorry" at least? At most, there should be a rectifying and damages paid, just as the courts realize.

Any strength we may have gained from the whole experience is due to ourselves looking at the positive, not from being duped. It still doesn't warrant extending peaceful relations to people who hate what you are. They haven't changed hating us.

This site is a great catharsis for damage control.

    hello englishman,

    nice thread,....

"Will time spent as a Jehovahs witness always have a disabling effect on a persons life, does the very existence of the WTBTS cause us to feel wounded?"

it could, if we allow it to.but then what have we learned form this expereince inour lives.........I trust those who are out and on their way to any form of spiritual insight, find value in the lesson of never allowing this type of clutish mentality to invade their life again.....

"Is it a good idea to blame the WTBTS for the negative impact that it has had on our lives, or will their come a point when the experience ultimately proves to be character-building?"

it may be agood idea at first to get you to leave........ but to keep that thought or hold onto it forever may do more harm than good. Who actually gains from it....... it was a LESSON... lets learn ..move on and help others if we can......

"If the experience does eventually engender a form of emotional intelligence within us, does this mean that we must start to think about actually forgiving all those JW's who handed out to us their own special form of emotional abuse?"

the forgiveness is important if we are to TRULY move on and get past it..and SEE value in it......forgiving ourselves first might be in order for the mistake WE made...... the choices WE made.....

to those that taught (this wonderful crap).....while having to take responsibility for their own actions....... we would do well to consider them as patients seeking medical treatment..... perhaps they just havent found the right doctor yet...*S*

    toodles.....

Undoubtedly; just look at the way it controls and has damaged Freddie boy.

Englishman, you're experiencing something that some (like Fred) will never know: Freedom! Something each slave to the WTS will have to discover for themselves; it's unfortunate that you can never do it for them; all part of growth, I suppose. SOme grow, and some never get beyond a certain stage of development.

Ah, a thinking English soccer hooligan. Just joking, Englishman. Always enjoy your thought provoking posts, true life experiences and interesting suppositions like this latest one.

So how can believing in something for so many years only to find out it was wrong NOT have a permanently disabling effect on one's life? But maybe if we genuinely free ourselves from the WTBS false realities and then accept each other for who we are now - out amongst the walking wounded - surely we can go forward and make the most of what we've got left; time and circumstances permitting.

Yes, I still blame the WTBS for ruining my life, but I don't hold them responsible. I joined them, they didn't join me.

As for your question about forgiving others. What's to say that a lot of the emotional abuse we have all suffered from Witnesses in one way or another would still not have happened anyway if we hadn't been hooked up with this religion? When push comes to shove, I believe people tend to react in a predictable way regardless of who they are, which way they worship or what they believe in.

My own theory for a better future for mankind now would be to wrest control of globalisation out of the hands of the corporations so the world can be a better place in our lifetime.

    Cheers, Uncanny.

I see that you picked up on the soccer theme. "Manchester Utd ruined my life" was featured on the TV some months ago, basically it was about Manchester City fans, many of whom felt aggrieved that they were overshadowed by their astronomically wealthy neighbours.

They felt that their close associations with such a dominant influence had a negative effect upon their own teams performances, I couldn't help but see a parallel between Man City fans and ex-JW's.
