John Kerry brands ISIS as Apostates.

    Speaking in Rome two days ago Kerry said;

“Daesh is in fact nothing more than a mixture of killers, of kidnappers, of criminals, of thugs, of adventurers, of smugglers and thieves,” he declared using the Arabic acronym for the ISIS group.

“And they are also above all apostates, people who have hijacked a great religion and lie about its real meaning and lie about its purpose and deceive people in order to fight for their purposes.”

    Source.

It seems like religious folk, irrespective of denomination, can only ever conceive of apostasy as a negative thing. This betrays a blinkered perspective, an unwillingness to engage, to debate, to argue your corner.

Whether ISIS are apostates or not has no bearing on their undoubted lies, deceit and terrorism.

I'm an Apostate and proud of it!

Nic, I think Kerry used the word deliberately and with great forethought, to call a Muslim an Apostate is to other Muslims to call into question everything the one so called stands for.

Kerry was not talking about your or me, people who have left an insignificant little cult.

If only these words would sink in to those likely to be Radicalized we will have fewer terrorists in the future:

“And they are also above all apostates, people who have hijacked a great religion and lie about its real meaning and lie about its purpose and deceive people in order to fight for their purposes.”

    Well said John Kerry !

I didn't know Kerry has a degree in Islamic Studies.

Like Phizzy I think John Kerry is simply trying to rile them up. That could be seen by his using the term Daesh which Isis detests.

You don't need a Degree in Islamic Studies to evaluate what Daesh are, or to offer your opinion if you are John Kerry.

Phizzy, VI, I get what Kerry is doing in using their own loaded language and paradigms against them. I actually think it's a little clumsy and ISIS will see right through it.

My point is that, as usual, the word 'apostate' is thrown around as an insult without any thought for what an individual has accomplished and often sacrificed.

There are increasing numbers of thoughtful, articulate men and women who have apostatised from Islam, are they all liars and deceivers too?

Typical PC spin and he has it back to front - they are the zealots, not the apostates.

What the world needs is more apostates, and less religious zealots.

What qualifies Kerry to judge whether or not ISIS are doing Islam properly?
