With Joelbear's gentle words in mind, in "Something I need to say", I am moved to quote (and nothing more I'm afraid) from Marcus Aurelius.
Quote:
"Whenever you are shocked by anyone's shameless behaviour, ask yourself at once, "Is it possible that there should be no shameless person in this world?" It is quite impossible. So you should not demand the impossible: this person is one of those shameless people who must necessarily exist in the world. And keep this argument at hand when you meet a rogue, a deceiver, or any other kind of villain; for as soon as you remind yourself that the class of people cannot fail to exist, you will view them more kindly as individuals. It is also helpful to reflect at once on this further point: what virtue has nature granted us to meet the wrong in question? For she has granted us gentleness to use against the unfeeling, and in every other case, another such antidote; generally speaking, it is within your power to show someone who has gone astray the error of his ways." (Meditations Book 9: 9.42)
