AUSTRALIA Victoria's Hume City Council candidate Phillip Di Biase, 19, grew up in a “highly controlled” Jehovah’s Witness community, but turned his back on the religion after he came out at 16. Now his life is devoted to helping homeless youths.
Proof positive thst those who leave do not end up in the gutter but lead productive lives. And at such a young age he knows what he wants to do. His words will strike a chord with so many young ones in the organisation: Boredom.
I liked his desctiption of the topics discussed in the literature coming round on "rotation".
His account of how his mother reacted at his disclosure of being gay . Shows how paper-thin the parental love is.

Don't quite know what to make of your comment asking whether he is on grindr, but would you make such a comment if he were straight? Probably not.
So what if he only has 11 followers on twitter and needs at least 4,000 votes. The publicity will increase his profile and twitter followers.
What stands out with this young man is his clarity of vision compared to many, many young ones who leave the organization and who are completely lost and without clear life goals.
Besides, every individual who stands in a local government election knows very well they may not get in. Those who do best have staying power and learn the ropes along the way, regardless of whether or not they get in first time round.
I think you reveal more about yourself darkspilver than him by your somewhat cynical comments about him and his aspirations.
Steve, I was once a "homeless young man." The only "help" that came my way was in the form of predatorial homosexuals looking for young meat. So, I learned to hustle.
It made a cynic out of me.

Would the newspaper headline have said: "Meet the str8 Hume City Council candidate who quit the Jehovah’s Witness community"? Probably not.
But seriously, it was a light-hearted comment - it's in a LGBTI publication, the third word in the headline is 'gay' and part of the story is specifically regarding his being gay.
I wish him well, his twitter count may be low now, but he's got seven weeks to campaign.....
I linked to the election results from last time to show that actually 4,000 is doable - and acually it's done through proportional representation too, so the second and third etc preference votes are important, and it seems that the number of council members returned in the ward increased from 2 to 3 at the last election. The downside is that all three current members are 'long-term' nominees, so depends if all three are standing again - nominations close on 20 September....
