I recently had a heart attack, after arriving at A&E they gave me an angiogram and it was discovered I need a bypass (quadruple). Will I was being prepared for surgery to consultant said he needed to speak to me and he said on your notes it says you’re a jw (I’ve been out over 20 years) I said no and I was willing to accept blood and my notes were updated. I dread to think what would have happened if I had been unconscious and unable to clarify the situation. My mum was with me (she’s a jw and we have recently reconnected) and she knows my views but I have a niggling doubt that she may have followed her beliefs if I was unable to consent. So please make sure your medical notes are updated as this could cost you your life

Notify your doctor, clinic, hospital, and update your HC-POA (or equivalent) and choose a non-jw that will respect your wishes.

Sensible advice, whatever your view on what medical procedures to follow or not follow, and for whatever reasons (ethical, religious, personal).
Never leave it to chance, or to the whims of a medical practitioner or a judge if it came to that, if you have strong views on what you do or do not want done to your body.
I hope all goes well for you, moley.

Ah, a fellow traveller! My double bypass surgery was exactly five years ago today. Glad you came through it all well, moley! 🙏
Also glad that you allow them to treat you to the full extent of modern medical practice. And especially glad that the difference between now and twenty years ago was caught before it might potentially have killed you!!
How's your chest feeling? A bit sore, 😕 I'll warrant!

Glad you are on the mend.
THAT would be the ultimate bummer...to reclaim your life by leaving Watchtower and then die early because of an old dpa. mixed up file or JW relative withholding blood. Even worse if it were your child.

MOLEY:
Best wishes for your future health and that close call should be a warning to everybody!
So it’s not enough to just tear up the blood card in our wallets! How easy to forget about something we filled out in a doctor’s office ages ago!! It goes to show just how far reaching the ramifications of having once been a JW could be!
In recent years, I had to answer the question of ‘what religion I am’ in a hospital.. I very clearly stated ‘Agnostic’.. Even though I was originally raised Catholic, I didn’t want to take any chances on this particular issue.
