The WT Society is a steward of the financial resources donated to it by readers of its publications worldwide. By investing in precious mineral and oil resources, they're fulfilling the Bible's prophecy about "desirable things of the nations coming in" to Jehovah's house at the last day.
The desirable things are not people, but instead they are the precious resources of the earth.
They're just practicing for when the WHOLE EARTH is turned over to them after Armageddon by Jesus Christ and his angels. They have to be able to manage earth's resources, so they're just getting a head start right now.
It also helps them maintain a comfortable profit-to-cost ratio, as any good corporation would do.
OH -- weren't they a non-profit organization? I guess it depends on who you ask.
