What has concluded that we might conclude in regard to it?

Hi DJ! Ihave been smoking ,"The Story of PHILOSOPHY"by Will Durant.

William James,wrote that sentence just before he passed on ,it was found on his desk.Born 1842,Died1910,His greatest achievement was his book ,The Principles of Psychology.

I posted his last sentence,after his lifetime of works,and hoped to see if anyone could make sense out of his ( CONCLUSION ) when he said that there is NO conclusion.

DJ.What have you concluded,I think its a shame that one could go a whole lifetime searching and end it with his statement,he came up empty,so sad.

It is sad BUT only if he was saddened by it, I suppose. For me, I have concluded that love is all there is that matters. It is hard to say what Will Durant meant exactly without having read his book. What was he trying to find? The meaning of life or how to live it or did he feel the need to comprehend every detail of everything? I think it is always sad when we entangle ourselves with the need to "get" everything. An awful lot of life doesn't make sense to me. If I focus on that I will go mad. love, dj

This reminds me of a scripture in the bible (not sure where) It says (to this effect) We should NOT try to figure out everything...that it Will make you crazy.

I think we should just enjoy life and try to make it better for others.

Hi Blue,

IMO, how we project the love is through kindness. It is not a warm fuzzy feeling toward someone because face it we do not feel that way toward everyone. For me, it is treating someone the way that you want to be treated aka the golden rule.

To whom? Anyone and everyone that we come across. Our neighbors are everyone. love, dj

"What has concluded (ended, been finished)that we might conclude (come to an understanding, bring to a close or ending) in regard to it." I don't know what he was asking himself, but what that question brings to mind is that as long as we're trying to understand, as long as we are still in the process of "seeking closure" nothing is concluded. He might also have been thinking about trying to put behind him what is done. Anyhow, an interesting question. Thanks for posting.

I think there IS no conclusion, we continue to learn and so each conclusion we make is superceded by a new learning curve. Also there is no end, the universe is infinite, though made up of finite parts. So we continue.
