Yes, according to Richard Bivins, vice president of the Albany, Georgia Convention and Visitors Bureau. He did a study last year on the 3 weekends of JW conventions held there and says it brought in $2.7 million to the city. Scroll down to "Visitors bring big benefits" at

They don't donate their money to the WTS, but they do like to stay at nice hotels, go out to eat every evening with their friends, and go shopping. For the last 35 years I have lived in a convention city with 3 conventions every year. You can see them everywhere after 5 p.m. spending, spending, spending. They hit the bars too.

Ken,
That is not really a big number. First of divide the total by three. That comes to 900,000. Now assume that there were 5,000 at each convention. That comes out to 180 dollars per person. That is not a big number. -

This reminds me of an advertisement I saw for some weigh loss stuff called Estrolean (for women). The Ad said that it helped 30 overweight policewomen lose 432 lbs. in 12 weeks. On the surface, it sounds fantastic, but if you divide 432 lbs by 30 women, they lost about 14.4 lbs. each. Divide 14.4 lbs. by 12 weeks, and that means they lost about 1.2 lbs. per week using this Estrolean. Not much different than what a person can lose on their own.....................
So this $2.7 million dollars that the Witnesses "spent" over 3 weekends, really isn't a whole lot when you get right down to it.

Oh yea. I remember traveling to the District Convention and staying at THE hotel of choice by all the dubs. After the session and then dinner, everyone ended up at the hotel bar. We'd be there till well after midnight. I remember several of my friends would be pretty much sloshed each night by the time they headed off to bed. Good times. I couldn't tell you anything about the convention but we sure had a good time in the hotel bars.

MM, as an active JW, you must know that according to the WTS, officially of course, it is not good to show up for the convention in the morning tired and/or with a hangoever.
Now on non-convention days, I suppose you can hit all the bars you want and stay up till the sun comes up. But according to the WTS, officially of course, you must refrain or be moderate, when attending a morning meeting the next day or planning a morning of field service the next day..
Many JWs party hardy when at the district conventions especially those in large cities, because they have more assurance that they will not run into anyone they know from their congregation, especially if they take off those nasty convention badges and get into more comfortable clothes. Many JWs party in their rooms and bring their own booze, cheaper that way and less likely to be discovered drunk and disorderly.
