What is your thought on Romans 14? Is only about food, or could you use it to argue it that you can celebrate thanksgiving, Xmas. Maybe it is ok if a woman dose not wear a hat when praying and so on, if it dose not bother you.

All in all Romans 14 is dealing with the freedom in Christ that we have. There may be someone who feels that wine is bad or that eating pork is wrong or........anything for that matter. Paul reminds us not to judge others. The caution is to try not to offend others who feel some things are wrong by purposefully doing whatever it may be by doing it in front of them to show how right you are..stumbling. Whatever is not from faith is sin in these types of things. Love fulfills the law. If you feel convinced that having a feast to thank God for the harvest is ok, then you are free to do so. All other holidays too.. It is about having a clean conscience before God. Be true to yourself in other words. The head covering issue is clear to me that there is no rule or it would have been stated there. We are free in Christ Jesus. Let no man judge you, you have one judge. love, dj

Hmm, I'm surprised I hadn't come across the connection with holidays before. But yeah, I mean considering what 14:14 says: "...nothing is defiled in itself; only where a man considers something to be defiled, to him it is defiled." I remember when I was first studying and this big shot PO in the area (not just big shot in that congregation that is) was telling me a very liberal interpretation of celebrating Christmas, (though he was generally considered old school) like oh well if they invite you to a party at work but you didn't do any X-masy thing then who's to say that's celebrating, funny now that I think back about it. I remember 1 Cor. 8 being another explanation for conscience matters, too. Now there it makes the point about meat sacrificed to idols - you take that and consider what Romans 14:14 says and I think you can begin to put 2 and 2 together. Idolatry is about a state of mind, it's not a matter of what the thing is - anything can be an idol. It's a matter of being in delusion.

Yes, actually, I feel that the part about observing days or not observing them can apply to holidays, birthdays, anniversaries or anything else. The bottom line in this scripture is that it is not up to any man or group of men to judge another individual's conscience. Each person has their own accounting with God (whether or not they believe in God is another matter, of course).

let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats
nothing is unclean in itself
the kingdom of God is not food and drink
But he who has doubts is condemned, if he eats, because he does not act from faith
It's the same sense as was called for as a necessary 'burden' by the apostles - about not eating blood - for the sake of others.
So does the rest of the world refuse blood transfusions because of the weakness and doubting of jwism ?

Hi Paduan,
The refusal of blood transfusions is a delusion when you consider the hypocrisy of the fraction allowances. It is merely a smoke screen to appear righteous. The forbidding of certain fractions not transfusions is the correct wording, sadly.

What they want to do with their life is for them, but a conflict ensues when they demand the life of others, to prop up fears that come from weakness, and works that don't come through faith.

Paduan,
I agree. I'd be interested on your opinion about the thread by Miner entitled...something like, JW's and locusts of the bottmless pit. This is the teaching by the jw's that blew my mind and started me running. The thread was started today 6/5/03
