- I can go anywhere in this world (even Cuba!) and people love me just for the country that I come from. (It’s true! People, (at least everyone except maybe Americans), love Canadians....and really, why wouldn’t they?)
- Canadians have rewritten their legal definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, saying denying gays and lesbians the ability to marry offends their dignity, discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation and violates their equality rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- We have decriminalized the possession of marijuana...not quite the same as legalizing it, but it’s a step in the right direction....although I must confess.... I do not smoke it. This decriminalizing of mj is so awesome in the face of the U.S. gov’t trying to force US to just say NO. Not fair that the U.S. was trying to dictate to us. *(Did you notice the big US and the little us?)
- Our Prime Minister told US, (that is, Canadian citizens), that WE would not go to war in Iraq without UN approval...that is to say...we wanted proof of the Weapons of Mass Destruction. Can you IMAGINE the pressure on our Prime Minister, honest-to-Ned?!! He never gave in though. THAT makes me prouder than ever to be Canadian!

Bear with me on this one...
I was in the men's room today. There was a young guy re-wrapping his turban. It was done in a straight across the forehead pattern as opposed the the traditional V shape I am used to seeing. As I was washing my hands I asked him if there was any significance to the different styles of wrapping etc. We ended up having a huge conversation about Moslem/Sikh tradions, East Indian food, etc.
It dawned on me that it was so cool that a caucasian male could have such a great conversation without the feeling that I was automatically a bigot because I am a white male. For this, I am proud to be Canadian.
I attended a wedding last weekend. It was a traditional pakistani ceremony, this night ending the 8 days of ceremonial celebrations. I was one of 8 caucasians of 350 guests, 6 of the others were local dignitaries. I got up and danced to the indian music. I did not get the feeling from anyone I wasn't wanted there.
In the past month, I have eaten traditional Chinese, Greek, Italian, Thai, vietnamese, and east indian delicacies.
I do not have to worry about going to the doctor if I am sick. I will never have to re-mortgage my house if I need surgery.
Canadian Beer. What can I say?
Tim Hortons. Those who have tried it will agree
We are known as peace keepers. I can be damned proud of that.
And double gold in hockey this past Olympics!!!
Happy Canada Day!!!!!
Uzzah - slipping on his Canadian flag boxers, Roots t-shirt and singing Oh Canada (because now I can!!!)
