GUARDS BLAST JAIL ORDER
Jail warders have been barred from whistling because Britain’s most dangerous murderer – dubbed The Cannibal – does not like it.
Four-times killer Robert Maudsley – who ate one victim’s brain with a spoon – moaned that the cheerful tunes got on his nerves.
Prison officers at top security Wakefield jail in West Yorks were stunned when a governor told them to stop. An insider fumed last night: “Its ludicrous. This is a man who killed four people.”
“He moans about something as innocent as whistling and the authorities bend over backwards to appease him.”
“Years ago he said he wanted a budgie – now he says he doesn’t like whistling.”
Maudsley, 50, has spent 25 years in solitary. He was locked up in 1974 after stabbing and garrotting an uncle – and has since killed three inmates. One was tortured for nine hours before Maudsley sliced his head open and chomped his brain. Maudsley was deemed so dangerous his cell had cardboard furniture and a concrete bed.
Brian Caton, general secretary of the Prison Officers Association, said outlawing whistling was “over the top”.
Home Office officials refused to discuss the ban. But a spokesman said: “Prison staff are required to maintain a high standard of conduct at all times.”
