Why do we speak different languages if not for the reason given in the bible?

I agree. I'd add the observation, that if you go back 500 years and try to understand the English spoken and written then you'd have a very hard time. go back a few hundred more and you would only understand it if you were an expert. I'm sure the same evolution is going on in other languages as well. Really, language has evolved in my short lifetime. Go back 20 years and use the word email or webpage. Anyone read any of those OLD (don't hold me to that as a technical term) English poems like Beowulf in the original text in high school?

I'm not gonna read all that stuff posted by OTS, cuz I know that after reading pages and pages of info, it will all just trace back to the tower of Babel.

Six~ said it, god heard it, and that settles it class!

Not only that, but if we had not evolved differently in different times and places, we'd all be eating shushi. Think of that.

Orbiting, where did you get that picture? It's OK, but I love the one with the magnolia in your hair.

I am going to take a stab in the dark and say geographic isolation. That is, when groups are physically isolated for centuries, their languages will evolve differently.

I remember reading some theories about how language evolved in one of Jarred Diamond's books... either The Third Chimpanzee or Guns Germs and Steel. Probably the latter. It's interesting because scientists are able to piece together ancient pro-languages that were never written based on the comonalities and relationships between old written languages. It's fascinating how different languages are related to each other... it's very similar to how all life is related and has evolved over the aeons.

Sorry Francois. I'm tired of my old picture. If you don't like that one, maybe you'll like this one of my dog better.
