Has anyone else read this book?

Her Ladyship bought it for me a couple of years ago. It's written by an American, Bill Bryson, and it covers the 18 years he spent living here in England. I found it immensely enjoyable and laughed out loud frequently as I digested it's pages.

Last year, a pal of mine, Knocker John, was seriously ill in hospital, so I took the book in for John to read. I think that John must have laughed so hard that the next day he shuffled off this mortal coil, and I didn't have the heart to ask the family if I could please have my book back.

    Moving swiftly on...

When Joy and Steve visited us last week, it occured to me that he might well enjoy the book too. So it was that I was delighted to see it on sale at W.H.Smith's in Wells as part of a "buy 1 get 1 free" offer. So I bought 2 copies.

Later that night, I was gratified to hear chuckles of mirth emenating from Steve and Joy's bedroom. The next morning, Steve assured me that he had been reading the book avidly and that it was the contents of the same that had been making him chortle so loudly.

So I was just wondering if anyone else had read the book?

There's a few pages here to sample:

I just read the first six pages of text from the book.....I must read the rest. It looks fantastic.

When he was talking about being in a pub and people giving directions, I just had to laugh.

    Hi englishman

I have read the book twice and have to agree it is very good. I love BB's style.

Can also recomend his book"The Lost Continent" about his travels through small town America.

Will look for this one to read. Read his books about hiking AP trail and traveling across U.S., the latter made mention of JW's. Thanks for suggesting it, I enjoy his writing style.

    Anglise,

I've also read his "Notes from a big country" about his return to the US. It gives a wonderful description of the American way of life.

I particularly enjoyed his recounting setting up a soccer team fin the US. He said that when he tried to head the ball it was like trying to head a bowling ball and that he was flat out for 4 hours.
