I got to thinking about this couple I knew growing up. They were bethelites for at least 10 years. They were the hard core bethel types, everything revolved around their bethel lifestyles. Then she accidentally got pregnant and they had to start their life OUTSIDE bethel. Does anyone else find this to be a screwed up policy? It seems like there should be a severance package for such occasions. Of course living with their meager/no income they didn't have a lot of savings, no jobs, (thankfully she was a nurse by trade and could obtain work easily), they had little to no furniture, and a baby on the way. We all know baby on the way means: car seats, high chairs, crib, bottles, diapers, clothes, etc. basically expensive stuff. They not only had to start over for themselves but also plan for a child. I find this to be a really screwed up policy. Couldn't bethel just have a day care section for those couples who are SO dedicated?

There IS a severance package when this happens. It's called "get the hell out" and it's all wrapped up nicely in a box with wrapping paper and a ribbon. See? They've just severed your life as you knew it.

Some Bethelites are called when parents of older minor children and the children get to live at Bethel or under the Bethel arrangement. The doctor's family at Wallkill and Brookyn are an example. Didn't Schroeder's son grown up at Bethel? But no babies that I know of.

The WT is NOT about to feed a mouth that cant work behind a printing press. First the infant has to join the lower ranks and eek out his own living, whilst spreading the "good news". Only after it's loyalties are proven, can it be allowed inside. It must learn total submission and humility by being stuffed into the lockers at high-school for not celebrating Christmas. THEN it will see that the "world" is such a cruel place. THEN it will be ready.... as for the mother... it is hard to turn a proper days work with a baby strapped to her back, and my goodness!... she might have to expose her breasts to feed the poor thing.
JMO.... good post

Blondie: I never knew that. I have visited Bethel many times and never saw anybody under the age of 18. It is possible they were in a restricted area. The couple in my first post aren't the only ones I know of that had to leave because of having a baby after MANY years of faithful Bethel service. You would think if they will allow a few children they would take these faithful Bethel brothers into consideration. But then again nothing the Society does makes sense.
