Nicholson obviously has a spiffier uniform. Phashion aside, philosophically, whose credo do you prefer?

Jesus: The truth will set you free.

Nicholson: YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

Personally, I'd rather drive Nicholson's golf cart and share some drinks (I don't play golf), but I have to go with Jesus philosophy.

I see it bandied about on this board alot; witnesses in general, your mom, your dad, the aged, the born in, the heavily invested in the religion, the sick, the crippled.. on and on, the idea that these people "CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!".

I simply don't believe it in 99% of the cases. If you can handle the truth, don't be so arrogant as to assume that someone else can't handle the truth, is my motto.

Even where the truth may hurt (somewhat) one individual, all of humanity benefits whenever a lie is layed to rest. We are one step closer to civilisation.

So, your 80 year old sharp-as-a-tack grandma who's seen all the crap in the org for 50 years? She can handle it.

Your 80 year old always-chronically-ill-and-most-of-it-is-mental grandma? Maybe she really can't handle the truth. But she is the rare case, imo.

Now go ye, and sin no more.

    Six~ giv'em some credit class

I'm with Jack on the cart....I'll even hit a few balls too...Not his, on the course.

As for handling the truth; they can handle it, they prefer not to. Too messy. Decisions to be made, etc. It is easier to sit back and *Let Jehovah take care of *it*.

I agree. Truth is an agent of evolution. Even when it hurts, pain and recovery from such pain are opportunities to become a better person and challenge your mind to realize new ideas. One of the worst errors, in my opinion, is for a person to underestimate their own ability to change and improve (especially in response to hard truths).

I have to agree with Jack, most people can't or don't want to handle the truth.

Loving or desiring truth comes with a pain threshold. Choosing truth hurts a lot in many instances, and sometimes it pushes you to the very limit of what you can take. Look at how many people stay in the Dubs with their truth-blinders on rather than face reality. Truth is many times painful before it becomes beautiful. But ultimately worth it in every circumstance I have encountered.

Kinda funny you brought this up as I'm debating whether or not I want to push my mother. I've been emailing her news links that I think may cause her to question some things. I don't think it's a matter of can she handle it, but, a matter of can my parents marriage handle it. As I still have young siblings living with my parents I don't think I should push it at this time. As much as I would love to unmuddle their minds, I don't think the timing is right. Ah well....
