It looks like the ability to click on the avatar thumbnails in order to go straight to the most recent posts of a topic is no longer working for me. Is this gone forever or will it be back at some point? It definitely made navigation much easier, especially for longer threads.

Maybe it's not gone completely, but it seems to have been changed such that I cannot open the link in a new tab.
Ah, yes - I did change it so it went straight to the link from the client rather than doing a redirect on the server so it should be slightly faster (it has to take into account the topic page size each person has set).
It isn't using a normal link because I just didn't think about opening in a new tab - I'll look at changing it so that it does and then that should work again.
